I just bought a 500gb evo with v nand today and I was hoping I could easily update the ssd's software on Linux mint, come to find out I have to use a unreliable peace of shit software called samsung magician dc. Who is Samsung trying to fool with this crappy software? Does ayone know of a better solution to update Samsung ssd's on Ubuntu/Linux mint?

Edit: after reading this post ---> http://superuser.com/questions/853247/installing-firmware-with-samsung-magician-dc I will not bother using that crappy software.

Shouldn't you just be able to install the SSD like any other drive, then use Linux Mint to format it?

You are not wrong but still I thought ssd hard drives are suppose to have up to date software no matter what OS you use.

Edit: my ssd is inside my laptop, last time I checked you can't format a hard drive while it's being used inside of a machine.

SSDs have their own firmware, which can be updated to fix issues, this is what he's referring to.

As for your problem, there's not really much reason to update the firmware, since 99% of the time all they're for is bug fixes and compatibility issues. Since you're not all that likely to run into any of this issues at this point...There's no real reason to update the firmware unless you're actually having an issue.

I am not sure what the SDD has to do with software.

SSDs often have firmware updates to dodge problems they might have encountered, or tweak algorithms to increase/speed/whatever. However in this case it seems they offer up a piece of junk program to flash it with rather than something more basic or universal. Linux itself may or may not be able to perform the update or dodge the need for it, I certainly would rely upon it happening for something in consumer world.

Anyway afraid I have no idea what to offer for the OP. I keep windows machines, liveCDs and such around for just this sort of reason.

It seems most company's such as Samsung don't give a :shit: about consumers outside of the mac and windows world. They make the worlds best ssd's but they suck at helping consumers when it comes to certain things.

I don't see any Windows hate whatsoever  the OP is simply using a Linux distro, and asked if there were a better way to update on Linux
Yes and a DOS live CD will do just
Since samsung supply iso files to make firmware updates via bootable USB/CD they clearly supply an easy way for people to update their firmware without software and regardless of OS

EDIT
Btw boot usb/cd via ISO is the standard way of updating the SSD FIRMWARE at least samsung offers a software solution.

Places like Intel and Crucial and Sandisk only offer the ISO route that Samsung also offers

OKAY THEN LET ME SHIP MY SSDS WITH LIVE CDS OF FIRMWARE UPDATES THAT ARE NOT EVEN OUT.

NO MANUFACTURER DOES THIS.

IF THE FACTORY MANUFACTURERS THE SSDS AFTER A FIRMWARE UPDATE COMES OUT THEN OFC IT WILL BE ON THE NEWER ONE.

BUT THAT DOES NOT APPLY FOR WHAT IS ON THE SHELVES.

HENCE WHY THEIR WEBSITES OFFER USERS TO DOWNLOAD THE ISOS AND MAKE BOOT USB/CDS TO UPDATE THEIR FIRMWARE

PLEASE THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK

and heres linux users thinking they are smart

there is a reason FIRMWARE UPDATES of your SSD require boot cds

I may have made it sound like they should ship live cd's with the products but that is not the case. What I mint was they should put the web address in the instruction manua that comes with the ssd, and windows cd. All they could do is put some words in the instruction manual saying "Dos/unix/Linux user can visit this website for more help http://www.samsung.com/global/business/semiconductor/minisite/SSD/global/html/support/downloads.html".

You're all losing your shit over nothing.
Aside from Samsung not supporting updates on Linux the way they do on other OSes, why didn't you just use any of the countless Windows based computers around you to perform the update?!
Dude, just ask a friend or something to use theirs and get it done.

But seriously, Samsung SSDs are sick fast XD

Again, search before you comment.
You can easily get an adapter for that (costs approximately 10 US Dollars).

I've worked on countless SSDs and I've done them all with an adapter.

EDIT: I mean that you have to take it off your unit and update it on a different, supported one.
