It's been awhile since i even touched my 3ds, but my brother in law wants to buy a kart for his 3dsXL he just bought, and asked me to help him. What would be the best?

I'm leaning towards the sky3ds+, since it seems like the easiest to get going and setup, but if you all dont mind, any thoughts? My only other choices are Supercard DStwo, and Gateway (though i heard gateway doesnt work on the newer firmwares). I appreciate any feedback, thanks.

If 1.0.0-3.0.0: Get Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon or other 4.0+ update cart and update with it after turning off wireless
If 10.6-10.7: Get The Legend of Zelda: Orcarina of Time 3D and Powersaves and downgrade
If 4.0.0-9.2.0: Set up CFW
If 9.3.0-10.5.0: Downgrade

If this causes your version to change, repeat. This is the cheapest option, and can even be free. Also, you can start games from the home menu.

What is it about the sky 3ds plus that allows it to just work on latest firmware?Anyone try it on 10.7?
It emulates a legit game cart instead of being a normal flash cart. This comes with a bunch of problems, including: No games launched from home menu (all other solutions support this), bumping the game switcher crashing the game, no eShop titles, no homebrew, no software game switcher (you have to go to the home menu and press a physical button until it's the game you want), etc.

EDIT: It's also the most expensive. Gateway is $80 and CFW is free.

You can have homebrew with it if you use cubic ninja on the sky3ds+.

What's powersaves? And can you direct me to the tutorials?

For me, I started getting into the 3ds hack/homebrew scene with a sky3ds blue button. Used that to play games without the new AP measures. Then I discovered browserhax which worked on my current system ver. of 10.3, used that to install homebrew and move into the realm of emunands. Once the downgrading to 9.2 became a thing, I did that without a problem and then just installed cia's of games I wanted to play, and converted my sky3ds into a cubic ninja exploit card. I also have a sky3ds+ just in case something ever goes super wrong, which I use for certain games.

Personally as of right now 3/20/2016, with ninjahax able to be exploited on any system version, I would get yourself a sky3ds+, its only 100$, it can be used to exploit cubic ninja, and can be used to run any game on any system, also its super simple to use/setup.

If you happen to be on a system version that is 10.5 or lower, you can always downgrade and just download cia's of games you want, which can take quit a bit more time/learning, but is cheaper in the upfront cost.

$40 for homebrew on latest in US (OOT3D was only rereleased here, you might have to get it used) + Learning how to do it vs. $100 for Sky3DS with a bunch of problems (see my earlier post in this thread). I'd pick CFW.

Pretty much the only reason for a game card is faster installs as cia files take time.
I would recommend Gateway as they never had to make changes to their card to enable new games.
Also it's a little less, sadly most sellers are shipping from Asia or just jack up the price a ton.

CFW is best. Sky3ds+ may lead you to NNID ban and also even though you use it to play Original Cart Dump it's not safe. Down grade your device.

To each their own I suppose, but with OOT3D you have to have a way to inject the save into the game, either by already having homebrew (which means you dont need it to start with) or by buying extra hardware (aka powersaves) which brings the cost up anyway. Not to mention I've never had an issue with anything you mentioned in your post about the problems.

If you use a private header with your sky3ds/sky3ds+ the chances of being banned is pretty much less than 1%, meaning people who were banned most likely were not using one, as I have yet to read of anyone who was using a private header straight from the start getting banned.

But like I said in my post, going the CFW rout and being able to install cia's and just launch them is the most fail safe method we have these days, I personally just like having multiple options, and I was forced to get a sky3ds/sky3ds+ at the time I bought my 3ds because it started on 9.9 and at that time the downgrade and all the other things were not options.

I considered getting a gateway just to have one, but with being able to do anything a gateway can already do once you get your system running 9.2, I did not see the point in spending another 80$ on something I personally did not need.
