Hello!

I give to you all my apologies in advance due to the noobish question I'm about to ask but I don't know a lot about 3DS hacking.

I was checking some topics and I discovered that is possible to run some .cia games and homebrews with a custom firmware installed. The problem is that I suppose that to install a CFW you need a firmware not higher than 9.2.0 . Is it possible to downgrade from 9.6.0-24 to 9.2.0?

I'd appreciate any kind of answers, hoping that this question doesn't get angry anyone (due to its noobish nature).

Thanks in advance

Yes, downgrading from 10.3=> is possible.

Installing CFW once it is downgraded is really easy but the downgrading does have some risks and takes many attempts to do succesfully in most cases.

Ok thank you for your answer, I'll be careful! I've read about downgrading with the exact version you wrote, I thought that it could be done only with that version installed. :)

Infact, I was thinking to upgrade first straight to 10.3.0-28 then downgrade it to the 9.2.0 one.

EDIT: P.S. How do I downgrade without a CFW already installed?

If you want to downgrade, DO AT YOUR OWN RISK!
I have been succesfully able to downgrade 2 O3dsXL from 10.3 to 9.2!
I don't regret my decision...
And If it bricks (in any way) Try recovery mode, if not your only option is to update via cartridge, or, hardmod it(ONLY IF U HAVE A NAND BACKUP)
Sysupdater

Do you know SysUpdater?

Yes, it's possible but a bit risky:

1) Download the starterkit from there and etract its content on the root of your SD:
http://smealum.github.io/3ds/
2) Download safesysupdater into the folder called "3ds" placed on the root of your SD:
https://gbatemp.net/threads/wip-safesysupdater.409392/
Alternatively, you can use the julian20's build of sysupdater, just google it
3) You need the correct package of the 9.2 firmware for your 3ds. The package for the new 3ds is different from the one for the o3ds. Also the region must be correct (in your case probably the european one). The firmware can be found on that ISO site that I can't link you 'cause is against the rule of the forum.
When you have downloaded the correct package, you have to place ALL the .cias into a folder called "updates" (without "") located on the root of your SD
4) Turn on your 3ds and change the theme of your menu, then run homebrew launcher (in these days the browserhax seems to have some issues and wont work, but you can use ninjhax or oothax instead)
5) install menuhax
6) Run safesysupdater or julian20's sysupdater (these can require several attemps to run properly)
7) Proceed with the downgrade (if you use safesysupdater chose "check" before to proceed with the downgrade)
8) cross your finger and pray without touching your console or close it
9) If all has worked properly, at the end of the process your console will reboot automatically. Probably you'll have a blackscreen. In this case turn off your console and reboot it without the sd inserted. If in this way it turns on, reinsert back the sd while the console is ON and change the theme of your menu.

Which one, .3dsx or .cia?

Don't I need to install 10.3.0-28 before installing 9.2.0-20? (9.2.0-20 is it?)

4) Turn on your 3ds and change the theme of your menu, then run homebrew launcher (in these days the browserhax seems to have some issues and wont work, but you can use ninjhax or oothax instead)
.

To install homebrew channel I suppose that I need to follow one of those hax instructions (since browserhax is not working and I don't have any other apps, I'll follow home menu instructions), right?

Thank you all for your answers, again! :D

The 3dsx ofc (in your current situation you can't install the .cia version)

Don't I need to install 10.3.0-28 before installing 9.2.0-20? (9.2.0-20 is it?)

Not necessary, someone says that it's safer, someone said viceversa. No proofs in both directions.

Yep. You can always try if the browserhax is "back to life". Probably in the next days, the browserhax will be fixed.

Sysupdater

Is recovery mode availiable by default on 3DS or does it need to be installed somehow?

Thanks again for the info, I'll give it a try with no regrets :)

I've already helped him to downgrade his console with success. I think that this thread can be considered closed.

Yes you can close it, the instructions manuel gave me were very helpful: I've successfully downgraded my 9.6.0-24E firmware to 9.2.0-20E. Thank you all for your support! :)
