Nintendo & Universal Studios Collaboration Details

Announced last year, Nintendo and Universal Parks & Resorts will be collaborating to create the world's first-ever theme park attractions based on Nintendo's games and characters. Little more was said other than the following:

The immersive experiences will include major attractions at Universal’s theme parks and will feature Nintendo’s most famous characters and games. More details will be announced in the future, as the Nintendo and Universal creative teams work to create specific concepts.

Now the first details have been revealed:
  • According to Sankei News, forty billion yen (US$351 million) is being invested in this project with the deal getting finalized on Friday. The paper notes that this is similar to the large-scale investment Universal Studios made in the Harry Potter franchise with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter area.
  • The Mario and co. themed area will be a healthy part of the park. Via Sankei News, the upcoming Nintendo-themed area is marked in red on the map below. The current Universal Studios Japan attractions areas are in green.

Recently, Nintendo has been expressing its wants to expand its reach beyond consoles. The theme park appears to be one of the many plans the video game company has been working on. It should be noted that the first theme park is set to be built in Osaka, Japan. No word if it will come to Universal Studios elsewhere. But considering the interest it will garner, it won't be long before they announce plans to expand similar theme parks elsewhere.

It'd be cool if there was a Mushroom Kingdom attraction, where you walk by and get confronted by a bunch of Goombas, you can jump on their hands and they disappear (trap door setups). Same with Koopas, when you hit those question marks, coins (chocolate with gold wrappers) come out, or a mushroom. This park will make more money than the Sonic movie.

So what can we expect from this real life Nintendo Land? A Mario Kart go-kart track, Toadstool Tour mini golf... I got it! A Starfox roller coaster where you get strapped into the cockpit of your very own Arwing! Barrel rolls til ya barf... :D

Honestly, while I'm very excited by this, nintendo is fully capable of creating a whole theme park instead of just one section. The amount of first party characters they have is astonishing.

Just imagine the main section being mushroom kingdom. Another section being haunted mansion, fire emblem, F-Zero in future land, etc..

Maybe it's just a problem with having the capital to build all of this. But other than that, it should've been the way to go

Imagine all the money invested, time spent, and new workers/subsection of entirely different industry they would have to hire to get this done.
Not only would they have to find the real-estate (which there is little of in japan) to build their own park , they would have to spend alot of time and money finding a suitable area.
They would have to spend money on funding this new park and keep it open, build rides, attractions, games, etc. (all the things you would find in any theme park)
They would then have to find and fund real-estate agents, contractors, engineers for the rides, a day-to-day staff and others.

When the money they're making on the park isnt making a dent on the expenses, funding would eventually come from the money that would've been spent on developing and producing video games and consoles. (which in turn would possibly hurt the desire to even want to visit a nintendo themed park if their current games are few and far between and in general start sucking).

Its way more realistic and safer for nintendo to outsource their i.p. to an already established park. Oversee its development and spent as little money as possible for R&D and any other expenses necessary on their part.

Nintendo makes bank, but they dont make near the amount of money as film studios (Universal and Disney).

Well yeah, I already thought of all of this, and said that it would probably be a problem with having the capital to build all this (and capital will include everything you have mentioned)
I just meant, in terms of content, they can easily have a whole theme park

Nice idea but a "Whack-A-Mole" version sounds more plausible, sounds fun too!

would be cool if they had their own park a 2 park model like universal , peach castle as the center of one park and hyrule castle as the center of the other

They could even use real mushrooms!

The green area is the "Main Attraction Area", the little gap in the bottom center is the front gate, the orange area is the "new established" area, the platform all the way on the left is the "universal city station", the top platform is another station, the bottom where it says JR is the "sakura dream line"(?). I'm excited to see what they add in the new area.

Ever since Iwata died, Nintendo has been whoring themselves out. He was against all this selling out and now that he's gone..well just look at all that's happening.

To be fair i think its just a dinosaur trying to survive.. I've loved them since the NES but the decisions they make (particularly in Europe) have made me all but abandon hope. They just seem to make bad decisions, a lot. I think the theme park could possibly save them.
