Since my 3DS now has homebrew on it and it is version 1.3.0 - 28U I have been happily playing Fire Emblem: If with the translation patch but now I cannot get the outfit I want for certain party members in this game due to not having the correct gems and not being able to use online features.

Is there any way for me to be able to use online features with the homebrew? It gave me a error because it wanted to update. Is there a way to bypass this or if anyone could tell me a much easier way to get the gems I need to get the outfits that would make me happy too.

Yeah I mean 10.3 apologies.

Also is downgrading dangerous? I don't want to brick my New 3DS XL.
Yes downgrading is dangerous, but if you're still on 10.3, then it sounds like you're planning to downgrade, so go for it. It's not a fool proof system though, but less and less people seem to report bricks, but I won't lie and say they're gone completely. Follow instructions and you have a good chance of downgrading. Most of the time, bricks come from user error.

Is there a comprehensive guide on downgrading? Also is there anyway to recover my system in case it is bricked?

Here:

In terms of being able to unbrick... I don't think so. I'm not very versed in the ways of hardmoding, but I'm pretty sure you need to have a NAND backup to restore which you can't get till you downgrade to 9.2, so if the downgrade fails, hope for just frankenfirmware.

Seems simple enough. What custom firmware would you recommend in order for me to make full use of my online features, be able to use mods on my games, and of course to make sure to keep everything region free? I currently do the latter two using homebrew.

Not sure about mods on your games, like if you mean rom hacks, use Hans I guess (yes homebrew is still used even in enuNAND). But the two big cfws are probably rxtools or AuReiNand. Good luck btw if you're going through with it. You shouldn't have too much of a struggle :P

Do both of the mentioned custom firmwares allow me to use my online features and in a region free way? My examples being a USA Pokemon Omega Ruby and a Japanese Fire Emblem If: SE. Also which is easiest to install or are they both about equally easy? Sorry for all the questions but this is the first time I have done something like this.

If you can get the latest update for your game, it seems to be region free. I've gotten EU Harvest Moon: New Beginnings, and JP Pokemon Y to connect to the internet using my US 3ds.

Rxtools should be able to do both. Not sure about AuReiNand as I only use that for a9lh, but it most likely should. I'd say they're equally easy.

Now I have my custom firmware with RxTools setup but it is saying it cannot read Fire Emblem: If (Japan) even if it clearly recognizes it. Help?

It should. Just make sure you install it from the FBI.cia as FBI from homebrew won't work.

Thanks, that worked. Now if I could get my old FE: If save to work then I would be good to go. It's quite far so I don't want to abandon it if I don't have to.

I have tried svdt and no dice it doesn't even start up so I can't decompress the save. Any ideas or am I just out of luck on this one?

Glad to know it worked. You could try the Jk save manager which is a cia install, so it night be better for you. Also are the regions the same? That may cause a problem.

I'll try that later. I need to know how I access the Eshop with RXTools. My concern is having all the online features so I can get full use out of Fire Emblem. I tried installing the slightly newer EmuNAND and it bricked so I had to go into my backup and restore it. Is there a much easier way into the Eshop? Any ideas?
