Hello all. I've been a long time prowler to the forums, but have never posted anything before. Thank you to all in the community that provide such invaluable information. Thanks to the forums I was able to successfully downgrade an old 3ds xl and set up an emunand unlinked with rxtools.

Today I purchased the new 3ds 20th Anniversary Pokemon edition and have a few questions on the best way to set up my new 3ds. First off, I want to say that the system version on these systems are 10.2.0-27U. The system came with a code for the 20th anniversary themes, however the Virtual Console games appear to be installed on the sysNAND / existing SD card that came installed in the console with the Red Version Backplate already secured.

The last time I set up emunand, I cloned my sysNAND to the emuNAND and then formatted the sysNAND. This time I plan on using reinand, instead of rxtools, because I read the compatibility with the new 3ds is better.

The system does not currently have a NNID. Is there any way to retrieve the original Virtual Console games WITHOUT using any CFW method through sysNAND. I would like to keep sysNAND unmolested. I don't mind linking a generic NNID, which I can set up through my Wii U. However, even if I do backup the titles by linking NNID, I will not be able to re-download through Shop on sysNAND because it requires a system update. Any suggestion on how I can achieve having these virtual console titles on the sysNAND after format? Thanks in advance!

As einhuman197 has said, you'll want to downgrade first. Without going into details that guides will explain it's simply 1. downgrade 2. emunand 3. injecting a CIA installer.

You can easily dump your legit CIA's afterwards and install them to your sysNAND, emuNAND or even just use someone elses from that iso site, they are all the same in the way they aren't tied to an NNID in particular (dumped versions from consoles, not store dumped versions ofc.)

Thank you for your reply. Would Minipasta be considered the least evasive way of installing a CIA on sysNAND? I do not want the CIA Installer to remain on the sysNAND (a little anal i guess...)

1. backup contents of SD card to your computer (and clearly label it, cause you may wanna do it multiple times)
2. Downgrade your N3DS. Make sure you're using the correct files, and make sure you use safesysupdater to check the files, the use latest sysupdater to downgrade
3. Check if you're successfully downgraded (basically not frankenfirmware with no CFW access). If not successful, downgrade again for safety.
4. Backup SYSNAND onto your computer (and clearly label that it is sysnand. maybe date and time it and leave a short remark)
5. Create emunand

Now the most important portion:

6. unlink sysnand
I know you don't wanna do this, but since you already backed up sysnand + SD files,
loading back the sysnand backup into sysnand, and placing back the SD files,
your stuff will still be there.

as far as I know, installed stuff doesn't go missing during downgrades,
and step 6 would mean your files are intact.

Whether do they work however, is a different story, cause you're on a lower firmware than when it was installed.

Thanks. I will backup my sysNAND, create the emuNAND, format sysNAND and then restore the image. I'll let you all know if the virtual console Red/Blue will boot on the 9.2 sysNAND.

sorry kinda noobish at these things, but how would you dump the legit CIA's? like the preinstalled pokemon games in the Pokemon N3DS?

Wanted to let everyone know Pokemon Red and Blue do work on 9.2.

There are various programs that allow you to install CIAs. Some of the more popular ones are FBI, Dev Menu, or BigBlueMenu. Each one has its plus and minuses, for example FBI can install DLC. And most importantly, as Queno138 said:

Do this before you make any installations to your sysNAND.

A little heads up.

What happened was I just got my clear 2DS, and after the emunand setup and all,
My default Pokemon game was nowhere to be found.

However, have no fear.
As Long as your emunand is on latest firmware, you can go eshop and redownload the game. :)

Nice to hear. Did you do all the steps what Queno138 said?
I've downgraded my 2DS earlier to 9.2 but I wasn't able to play... but then again I didn't install an emunand and all other things yet. Can you confirm that's a neccesary step?

If you downgraded but can't use the other CFW, that's probably because you didn't downgrade fully.

If you keep looping back to HBL or black screen,
Try downgrading again
(After the files are checked and confirm the right files)

Well maybe the problem was that when I've upgraded that I used another SD card then the one where Yellow was on. Could that be the problem? I will try downgrading again with the right SD card maybe then it will work (I hope)

I don't understand the process of what happened.

Is okay to switch SD cards, provided You transferred all the files over and injected the emunand.

I swapped SD cards so many times.

Such an annoying process ><

Well I didn't transfer anything. I simply took out the SD card (included with the 2DS console) and started doing tutorials to downgrade to 9.2 on another fresh SD card. After all that I want to play pokemon yellow again, so I simply insert the original SD card again and it doesn't work. Very noobish of me to expected that it would work like this :)

If you were relying on hax like menuhax, you need to transfer the whole content of your first SD over to second

If you didn't transfer the original contents of the preinstalled SD card to you new SD card, you will need to find a CIA file through a certain iso website to get the games back. You can reinstall it on sysNAND if you wish through any installer. Really there is no difference on your LEGIT Virtual Console titles vs installing through a CIA you find on the net.

This also can be an option. As for the NNID. You may encounter some problems getting that to set up. These options may help:

1) If you want a new NNID, the easiest solution is to create a new one through Wii U. Maybe you can ask a friend if you don't own a Wii U, as it can have 8 different NNIDs stored on the console. You can then login on the 3ds without having to update past the default 10.2.0-27U FW.

2) Someone mentioned, either on Reddit or here, to call Nintendo if you want to use your existing NNID from another 3ds system. Tell them that your previous console is broken and they will free up your NNID to be able to login.

If you do a backup through NNID and Shop, you will be able to access your games through emuNAND + shop once updated properly. Just be sure you don't end up with frankenfirm. If you do, I suggest restarting the downgrade process until you can properly set up whatever firmware you were wanting. Before upgrading your emuNAND, be sure to backup the image of it on your PC. That way, if something goes wrong while updating your emuNAND you can easily restore with minimal effort.

Just wanted to add that I love this console. I prefer IPS screens, and I got both top and bottom IPS! There are reports that this could be from the last serial number. I purchased mine through Toys R Us, and the ending serial number is 1. Several users have reported TN/TN, IPS/TN, and IPS/IPS. This is the first time I have heard of a new small 3ds using IPS. Happy hunting if you are searching for one :)
