I MESSED UP IN THE TITLE. I AM ON 10.6 NOT 9.6

I'm not really sure what the difference between all the CFW's are. I'm on N3DS so I obviously want to take advantage of that. I want to be able to have games run on GPSP in the best way they possibly can. I don't know what else you can do on a CFW that you can't on Gateway, but I want to take full advantage of it.

Are you using menuhax, A9LH or neither?

Reinand and cakes let you boot ds games and gba VC out of Emunand but lack region free. Rxtools is the other way around. Regardless which cfw you can update to 10.6 emunand, no need to stay on 9.6

I have no idea what any of those are. Actually I have a small idea based on reading people talking about them, but I have no experience when it comes to them.

The only thing I have experience with is Gateway. I just put myself on the latest gateway version and I updated my emunand to 10.6 (crap, I accidentally said 9.6 in the title. I'm on the latest firmware version by Nintendo)

I have no experience with CFW. I want to be able to run a CFW for things I can't do on Gateway and have CTR Boot Manager to be able to run Gateway as well.

So you have 10.6 emuNAND, right?

You can use the ReiNAND plus NTR CFW. ReiNAND simply boot emuNAND and NTR CFW can use cheats like Gateway (and like a boss X°D), screenshot in game, debugger and region free. A powerful combo

Region free: rxTools
Stability: ReiNand
Multiple emuNANDs: CakesFW

So rxTools is less of a hassle because the region of your CIA's don't matter right (are these the only thing where regions are applicable?). ReNand is the most stable? What do you mean by Multiple emuNAND's for CakesFW? You can literally have multiple emuNAND's running like save slots in a game?

So NTR runs Gateway WITHIN it? It's a CFW that Loads Gateway? I'm assuming NTR is different from ReiNAND and you're telling me to have them both with CTR?

Yes to all. Region free can be done in all of them, however if you aren't in rxTools, you need to launch NTR every time to get it.

Correct. You can have some different emuNANDs. You can have for example one Japanese NAND and one European NAND and swith them. rxTools' region free doesn't work on newer games like the new Zelda or FE if (if not patched)

NTR is a CFW which can be launched on top of another CFW. It has nothing to do with Gateway, it just has cheating functions.

Also, menuhax and A9LH are both ways of running custom code (that includes CFWs) when turning the console on.

So menuhax and A9LH are ways of launching the CFW's. Well since I'm on 10.6 I heard menuhax no longer works? I have a copy of cubic ninja anyways so there is a way to launch with that yeah?

My N3DS already has CIA's installed on it, and I'm not certain about their region (I was using Gateway and I'm not sure if it's region free or not). So if I chose Rei I would have to launch NTR on top of Rei EVERY time I wanted to play an out of region game?

Also how does CTR Boot Manager tie into all of this? Do I use something like menuhax to launch CTR from which I choose a CFW? Like choosing an OS on a computer with multiple boot options?

Yes.

Your sysNAND can't be on 10.6 if you can use Gateway. :P

Exactly.

Perfect.

Just hop into my guide and begin from section cfw setup. Skip the dbs part, you don't need that. Just grab homebrew launcher kit, ctrbootmanager and a cfw, then setup menuhax with the less hax payload and copy ctr and cfw to the right place and you're basically done. It runs on your gateway emunand, you can just continue using that.

Thank you so much for all of your help! It is greatly appreciated!

Do you know if Gateway is region free? Like if installed CIA files work on the Gateway emuNAND will they work on Rei?

Also so in this case, do I install CTR first and then the CFW or install the CFW first and then CTR?

I think it is, however, I don't have one.

Worst case is you need to launch NTR every time you reboot your 3DS.

Check out wurstpistole's guide, it walks you through the whole process!

MenuHax didn't give me an option between type 1 and 2 when I installed it (that's where I am now). Does this mean that I should have done something from earlier in the tutorial?

Nope just go into menuhax again, select to configure or change the type (something like that) there you can change the type
