So I haven't been keeping up with Gateway in a few months. I heard that you can put GBA cia's on there and I wanted to come back in. Should I still use gateway or is there another method now? How well do GBA cia games run?

I'm on New 3DS firmware 9.0.0-20U and on Gateway 3DS Ultra V 3.1.1. What have I missed?

Gateway still does not support gba games

You can use rxtools or other various cfws to play gba cia installed to sysnand (or if you want to play them on emunand you'll have to install them to emunand and sysnand ALSO)

You can autoboot gateway and rxtools simultaneously with menuhax and ctrbootmanager (search about it)

Gateway 3.7.1 is the latest version if you want to update your launcher.dat just download from their website and replace the one on your sd. Gateways latest version supports the latest emunand however 10.6 was released today and I'm not sure if the multirom menu will work

N3ds users now have access to the most recent emunand. Arm9loaderhax is real, and extremely useful. GBA cias run decent enough.

So as a N3DS user how do I gain access to the most recent emunand? What's Arm9loaderhax?

So if I understand correctly using Gateway itself runs a CFW? Now there are better CFW's out there besides Gateway and I should switch to one of those?

Just drag and drop the latest launcher.dat on to replace the current one on your sd and update emunand (make sure your updating emunand and NOT sysnand)

I wouldn't switch if you want to use .3ds files, especially since using menuhax and ctrbootmanager you can run both gateway and other cfws side by side depending on you want to play .3ds or gba cia

But i'm assuming that's for Gateway? From what i'm understanding if I switched to something else besides gateway (which I can do now) it would do everything Gateway can and more? (Like playing GBA games).

Basically, the cfws out there do everything gateway can do and more literally the only thing they can't do is play .3ds games. All games must be installed to homemenu as .cia files.

So I should

1. Update my Gateway launcher
2. Get another CFW to run alongside Gateway? This one would be JUST for GBA games? So this isn't the ability to choose which CFW to boot, but literally running both simultaneously?

that is exactly what I suggest since you already have the convenience of using the card. Read the homebrew section a bit and familiarize yourself with menuhax and then ctrbootmanager and you'll be up and running exactly what you like in no time

Use CRT boot manager and switch between GW.3dsx and pasta CFW for dsi and GBA

Thank you so much! Your help so far is greatly appreciated.

So it's completely safe to update to the latest emunand? The newest one by Nintendo is fine?

Yes but again just always make sure that you in emunand before updating. Entering then exiting system settings reboots the console and kicks you out of emunand, there have been a lot of accidental updates becaus of this.

Just make 100% sure that you are in emunand and that it says GW before the firmware number, then go straight to update system firmware without ever exiting settings.

Sorry for being so specific but I don't want to be the cause of any mistakes lol

Oh no, I appreciate that you're being specific in your instructions, I fully understand that stupid mistakes can be made. So I got the new launcher and updated emunand.

I'll look into CRT Boot Manager and another CFW later on tonight probably. Is there a CFW that you would recommend? Do any have specific advantages or can do more things than others?

What's Arm9loaderhax?

It's a way of coldbooting into CFW or whatever you want right at power on, even lower level than MenuHax. Think BootMii. While it may intrigue you, I would suggest waiting a while and understanding more about the current state of things rather than jumping right into A9LH (ARM9LoaderHax).

Most will probably recommend RxTools to you, which is fine, as it offers a lot of extra features, like dumping and decrypting games, and region free out of the box. Just note that there are alternatives too, like CakesFW and ReiNand, which aim to be more minimalistic, only providing you a stable emuNAND and not many more features than that. However, if you combine Cakes or Rei with Decrypt9, Uncart, and Emunand9, three homebrew apps which focus on different things, like dumping games, and making backups of sysNAND/emuNAND, you can get the exact same features as RxTools, while keeping them separate. It's just a matter of preference: Do you want all of the tools integrated into a menu that comes with the CFW, or do you prefer to keep tools out of your "soup" and only call them up when desired (i.e., use Decrypt9 and friends)?
