I am looking for a definitive answer as to which homebrew or application provides the best transfer speeds for those with the N3DS with the hassle of removing the back plate each time

I have come across the following (I am sure I am missing some, please lmk in your replies)...

FTP-3DS
ftbrony
ftpony
FTP-GMX
microsd management

I am fully aware that the wifi hardware within the N3DS isn't great... BUT I would like to know from people's experience which offer's the faster transfer in their experience

Feel free to lmk if I have missed one from the list that is better

Thanks in advance

On N3DS I just use mSD Management as a CIA shortcut from Apache Thunder (it's on the ISO site). If I have to transfer huge files though (100MB or more), like a game CIA, I take the mSD out.

ftpd because B-) and microSD Management isn't FTP, it's SMB.

Is there an EU shortcut for mSD Management?

I have this installed but never gave it a try since he released it, will try it out :)

It gives you a crash error box after exiting it (it won't reboot you out of CFW), but it works fine for me. The only thing not to do with it is: start CFW -> run mSD Management -> then try to boot NTR. I've found NTR always fails to boot after running mSD Management from that CIA for some reason. Either boot NTR first, then mSD Management, or reboot the 3DS afterward.

microsd management on old3ds
SMB != FTP.
I've heard of plenty of people on Linux/OSX having trouble getting µSD management to run, so I can see why some people might prefer FTP.
There's also the fact that Apache Thunder's rebuilt Home Menu version makes it all go slightly haywire and breaks NTR CFW and requires a reboot, as @daxtsu said.
The opposite is also true: Running it after having ran NTR CFW makes the whole thing blow up and boot you to an error screen of death on exit.

As for the FTP solutions you've listed, FTPony is completely deprecated, FTP-GMX is a plain rebrand of FTPD AKA FTBrony and FTP-3DS doesn't exist anymore.
I believe FTP-GMX is the best option at the moment until ftpd has a .cia build. (If it'll ever even happen.)

FTP-3DS the last build He made 1.2 before it disappeared is the fastest of the FTP apps. Transfers at around 1.3mb/s for me.

Micro SD Management can go faster than this I have Peaked at 3MB/s

Hm, On my N3DS it does show that generic error message, and it does remove NTR from memory (pressing the hotkeys to bring it up do nothing), but the system doesn't crash. Trying to run NTR again won't re-install it either. That leaves a reboot as the only option, so yeah, I guess if you need to use mSD Management, just reboot afterward to be able to use NTR again.

So it seems like a toss up between FTP-3DS_v1.2 which was linked here earlier in cia format by @squee666 or microsd managment (Apache Thunder edition) recommended by quite a few

I suppose the only way to really tell would be to transfer 1 specific file under the same conditions (distance to router etc...) and calculate time take, or are there other variables that should be considered ?

Seems a fair bit of interest in this judging by all the replies, big thank you to all of you that have replied I do value your opinions, thank you

If anyone has anything else to add, or even an application missing that is better please step forward and let me / us know

Thank you all :)

Well, I'm only saying ftpd is better because FTPing is easier than SMBing on an Android phone.

I personally use a Chromebook, which then has ubuntu installed on it as a secondary OS for when I need it. I use WinSCP via Wine + Super FTbrony II Turbo 2.1. I get about 800 KBps, but really I never even look at it because I only use it for smaller files. Any big files are usually cia files anyways, which I can use Socketpunch GUI Mod + FBI 1.4.17-chen-fix4 to wirelessly install it with about 800 kbps also.

My Condition of testing Netgear DGND3700 Router its Dual band and About 3 years old

Laptop is Connected via the Wireless 5G ( its a Bigfoot Wireless 1202) so a broadcom Card
3DS connected via to 2.5G

Distance from router about 15foot im upstairs.

MicroManagement speeds i get from the very start and it holds

f3ef20461316c61f9cabb2aeeabfa9a6.png

FTP speeds i get at same distance , have had faster at closer (FPT-D versios 1.1 used to give me 180kb top speeds regardless of distance)

This started at 300kb then rose to 500KB after it stabilised it went to 900kb

leaving it longer it speeds up again

Problem with FBI network installing for me is it can error out mid transfer for no reason.
besides its faster(in some cases) for me to copy over the Larger cias and install them via FBI/Nasa

Nasa will install CIAs for me at 1mb/s + seen it Install files at 2mb/s +
Nothing more annoying when you are 50% into installing something and it fails

Thanks for the Heads up on chen fix fbi though.

Also note speeds vary router to router, also my Kaspersky hates me using samba so i have to turn it off to get access xD

All the FTP servers are based on the same code, though newer builds of ftpd (and by extension, other forks that're kept up to date) are a lot faster. FTP will generally be faster than SMB due to less overhead. That should hold especially true with the newer ftpd builds.
