I have noted that you stated homebrew and emuNAND are independent things, however, may I please clarify whether or not I need to boot into emuNAND to install browserhax?

Furthermore, if you were in my position and wanted to do both, would you update emuNAND to the latest version first and then meddle with homebrew afterwards or vice versa?

Thanks once again.

(GW3D 9.2.0-20E and sysNAND 4.5.0-10E)

Why would you want homebrew on Emunand just to update it? I'm pretty sure you can update Emunand through System Settings just fine. Just double check that you can and then try to update it.

Oh, maybe I missed it, but are you using N3DS or O3DS?

O3DS because N3DS came out at around fw 8.1.0

I suggest using themehax and ctrbootmanager. CtrBootManager will allow you to choose to boot into EmuNAND (CFW of your choice) OR boot into the Homebrew Launcher. You can just update your emunand. As I said, they are seperate. You won't influence the other when doing something to one of them.
What do you want to use the homebrew launcher for? Oh, maybe I missed it, but are you using N3DS or O3DS?

Thanks for the quick replies, I appreciate your help!

To be perfectly honest, all I wanted was to mess with PKHeX, a Pokemon editor which I believe is only accessible via homebrew.

And to make it apparent that I am completely out of my depth, I don't think I'm using N3DS or O3DS or a CFW for that matter. All I have is a gateway flashcart with emuNAND running.

Simply put, all I want to achieve is to be able to play games that are incompatible for me now and hence my reason to update emuNAND, and take a stab at this homebrew thing so that I can alter my save file. And at the moment, I'm thinking of giving up on the latter...

I do udnerstand the 2 modes the Gateway has but you tell me that these are for either sysnand or emunand.
But once you setup emunand it will boot into emunand, no matter which mode you select.
How are you able to select gateway or the classic mode but boot into sysnand?

I did some research, but its hard to find some information besides only guides on how to setup things up etc.
You provide this thread for people like me, and whats wrong asking someone who knows the stuff already?
Also english is not my first language.

I don't think you know what N3DS or O3DS or CFW means.
N3DS = Nintendo New 3DS; The device you are using. O3DS = Nintendo "Old"/Original 3DS; The device you are using. The Original is the first 3DS released and the New 3DS is the newest (duh) device.
So what is your device? a New 3DS or Original 3DS?
CFW is custom firmware, it's what you can use to load up EmuNAND. I don't really know much about Gateway unfortunately.
To play games, you can update EmuNAND just fine. Gateway supports up to 10.4 for O3DS and N3DS. You can use PKHeX in Homebrew just fine with the updated EmuNAND.
Don't worry, it's a bit daunting and complicated at first, but once you get it running, it works like a charm. If you have any issues, shoot me a message!

Sorry if I'm losing my patience with you, it's just I hate repeating the same information over and over again.

Now you just have the wrong concept about booting into modes.

You could always boot into Sysnand with either mode. You just needed to go into the Gateway Menu and hold down B and it will change it to "Boot Sysnand (whatever mode you're on)"

Indeed I did not know! I'm about twenty hours in reading all these .cia, CFW, homebrew etc. things and as you can tell I'm getting myself confused.

I did, however, find a section in the Gateway manual here http://scmods.com/gw_guide/GW-3-7-1.pdf page 4 "Entering the Gateway Menu" which seems to give a guide on how to get homebrew working, merely because I see the words "homebrew launcher", "menuhax manager" and "browserhax" thrown around in the .pdf haha.

And, yes I have the O3DS.

If you know what you're doing then normal Sysupdater is no different than SafeSysupdater.

Also why would you want to update something if you were going to downgrade anyways?

I have not expressed well.

I already have the Nver updated, I did a while, I did not plan to downgrade at the time. Now i want to downgrade, and I just wonder if this can cause an error. Sorry for my basic english level.

Sorry if I posted this already, but I want to know if my R4Gold flash card will work on my unlinked O3DS sysNAND 9.2. Is it possible that it will work on rx tools emuNAND 10.5? Also, do I need a new firmware bin for rxtools to update from 10.3 to 10.5.

Is it possible to take a sysNAND backup and, without a hardmod, play it back into sysNAND? (version 9.2)?
Yes, on 9.2 and lower only. You can do this with the Gateway launcher. Boot into the Gateway launcher, and scroll right until you see the downgrade option. Hold up on the d-pad and select the downgrade option, it should now tell you that you can restore a NAND backup.

I'm sorry to break this to you; you must have done something wrong. It's not our fault that you bricked your 3ds, it's entirely your own. Hacking the New 3DS is NOT a 'suicide mission' or something like that. I did it only two weeks ago and I am playing away with my 10 cia's installed. Sjucks for you that you bricked it. It's a thing happening right now but a lot of people have successfully downgraded. You should have read the disclaimer on almost every guide; there is a chance of bricking. If that wasn't a risk you were willing to take, you should have read more carefully. The only option you have now is using Sky3DS+.

Hi, after using the tutorial to setup rxtools 3.0 on a 2ds with sysnand 6.0, I've been attempting to update emunand from 6.0 to 10.5 using system update. After updating I would always end up with a black screen when restarting rxtools. Has anyone had any success updating emunand using the latest rxtools nightly? The tutorial says I might have success using rxtools 2.6, are the steps to downgrade rxtools, the same as updating it? Is there another way to update emunand without using system update?

Hmm would you happen to have a link to a recent tutorial for homebrew for my situation? I was intending to follow the tutorial in the .pdf link otherwise.

Also, before attempting homebrew, is there any precautionary measures I should take (backup this and that)?

Thanks very much for your help Temarile!

I think you can find what you want here :
http://smealum.github.io/3ds/

1 : prepare your SD card. Do as it's said. I recommend the starter pack.
2 : chose your entry point to enter the HBL. Check the list of entry points in the upper section.
Depending on your sysNand version, you can use 1 or more of them.

With my N3DSxl 9.2 i use browserhax. But if i remember, it had a low succes rate when i used browserhax with an old 3DS.
