Hacking Best way to use Gateway 3DS?

Hi,

I am an old gateway 3ds user and have been away for a while. I have an O3DSXL with system 4.5.0 and have emunand 9.5 set up.

With the potential to ban and whatnot, what's the best way to play games online now? I see CIA files are generally safe but they don't seem to be compatible with system versions above 9.2 (not sure what the point is then since you generally need the most recent system version to update and play online in the first place)

Are there more setup steps to getting CIA files working? I used to use the ol' 3dz files with private headers and it seems like I need to install a CIA manager now too. That would go into the emuNAND right?

so far I have just copied the latest launcher.dat 3.7.1 to my SD card and updated my emuNAND

You need to update your emunand if you want to play games that require any firmware above 9.5.

that's the first thing the message bar said when I created the thread. That confuses things.

If you download CIA's you don't have to build anything.

First, that's on sysnand, I believe. Emunand allows you to safely install cias.
Second, to install a cia just put in your internal sd card, and install via title manager of your choice.

No, you should be good. Update your emuNAND to the latest version, use the latest launcher.dat, and install any CIAs you get from certain unnamed sites with Big Blue Menu or the better option FBI. You can also make your own CIAs if you want, it doesn't really matter in the end though, as long as you install said CIA onto your emuNAND. To get CIAs to work, you just install them, done. No private header crap, no renaming anything, just install, and done.

Things you only have to do ONCE
Step 1: Have at least one retail game. Can be anything.
Step 2: Dump it through the Gateway menu, and put the rom on your pc.
Step 3: Get gateway rom patcher, double click on it, open your own rom.
Step 4: Click on export header to file.

Stuff for every game you want to play online
Step 1: DL rom from wherever
Step 2: Open Gateway rom patcher and click on the rom you downloaded
Step 3: Click on the checkbox that says rename to .3dz when done and import header from file
Step 4: Click on the header from the game you dumped
Step 5: Place .3dz rom on microSD and play online and never get banned

Nobody has gotten banned from using private headers ever. There is literally no point to him wasting his life installing CIA when he has a Gateway.

The fact is that it still takes hours to install a CIA file. If OP wants to spend that much time installing a game, he can use that time to walk to the nearest Walmart, buy a bargain bin game, walk back to his house, and get a private header in the time before the CIA finished installing.

EDIT: @XDark_FenixX Continue using .3dz as you have been, but you should get a CIA installer anyway so you can install DLC and updates.
The whole point of having a Gateway is for the convenience of using .3dz files. If you are going to use CIAs, just sell your Gateway and use CFW.

CIA files are installed to your emunand on your sd. 3DZ files are on your microSD in your Gateway cart. Depending on what size cards you have, you might prefer one over the other. Both should be safe for online play.

aside from all that, you can now set up your o3ds to boot straight into Gateway with Menuhax so you don't have to bother with the DS Profile exploit (4.5) or loading Gateway through browser (9.2). I have mine set up to load straight into Gateway mode and installed HBL cia to launch HB. Takes a little hex editing, but works great.
