Hi,

I came into two kiosk units. One is a 3DS XL and one is a 2DS. They are on 7.1.0-6E (the 3ds xl) and 7.1.0-12E for the 2DS. What is it that stops them from running without the A/C adapter? Is it internal hardware that is different? (Also, not that I plan to do it but can this update from a standard system update?)

Obviously if I do update them it'll be to whatever E game updates to 9.0-9.2... any tips on those taken, as I am of course a U and not an E, these were just so interesting to me I nabbed them.

Any info whatsoever about kiosk units, turning them into normal units via using a gateway to set something, etc would be greatly appreciated. :)

Are these retail units and only act diff with a NFR cart in them? Can one use this and a GW card to run backups of games one owns?

Anything else to know about Kiosk units?

Kind Regards,

npt

There is a warning saying it won't run without the main power unit. No matter what you do you will always need the A/C. (They weren't made for user-friendly playing)

Nailed it, the vast majority of them are not dev consoles or the like, the magic comes from the game (autoboot enabled + home menu permanently blocked ingame or it would power off when trying display the launcher).

As for ignoring the battery, nobody tried to compare the hardware differences AFAIK!

mostly likely this is mainly due to the device being on permanent charge that the battery is dead

Well, it appears that many Wii U Demo Units out there are CAT-I Units (Wii U Test Units, suitable for public view).
CAT-I Units also come with System Config Tool, which is basically the DevMenu for Wii U.

However, in case of the 3DS, it's different.
These are just retail 3DS Units with a demo cartridge in them.
Demo cartridges often have the Home Button disabled, and normally autoboot, as long as the cartridge is inside the 3DS.
I have an MK7 Demo Cartridge myself, so I know how it works.

Kiosk units are generally almost identical to retail units. Earlier models at game events didn't have the Home Button disabled and had things like DevMenu installed but that's been changed, now kiosk units don't have internal software installed and you won't be able to use the Home Menu when a demo is playing.

The unit itself has been re-wired so that it won't run without being connected to the stand. This is for two reasons; firstly it's so that the units constantly have power and won't run out of battery, and secondly it acts as a theft deterrent as stolen kiosk units won't function properly and have no resale value (except to collectors).

The demos you see are actually from special "Not for Resale" cartridges that cause the 3DS to autoboot them which is why you can't enter the Home Menu without ejecting the cartridge.

I've seen a couple of those floating around on EBay, would you say it's safe to buy online?

It would be safe if you wanted to get a 3ds that you need to have in constant charge. I don't see the value in having one besides it being a collectable. I haven't seen anyone who was able to hard mod it so it didn't need a constant charger. If you want to get one, go for it! Just know what you are spending money on.

I was thinking about NFR cartridges, though it would be cool to have a connected kiosk unit on my desk purely for decorative and collection purposes.

What's the price for those things? I wouldn't pay much more when I could get a fully functional one. If I got one, it would be for spare parts. If you have a decorative setup in mind, it could be pretty cool.

Pretty high even for demos, never mind non-games like local Pokemon event server cards...

...I still wonder how a friend of mine got in 2005 (we were 9 back then) a demo cart of MKDS for that matter!

Between £25-100 per cartridge. Actually, I saw a listing for a kiosk under £500, it included a 3DS, 3DS XL, and the entire kiosk intact. Looks tempting but there's not enough room here to set it up :(

I saw some Pokemon shelfs from a GameStop for sale a while ago. Did the kiosk come with the stands as well?

i think i heard of that, it's a good idea, shouldn't need a dedicated GPU just to run a LLM or video upscaling

even the nvidia shield tv has AI video upscaling

LLMs can be run on cpu anyway but it's quite slow

I had a girlfriend who had a twin sister and they would mess with me constantly.... Until one chipped a tooth then finally I could tell them apart.... Lol

@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i don't think nvidia wants to get in the x64 cpu market anyways

you've seen how much intel is struggling getting into the gpu market

i don't think they want to take more focus away from their gpus

Yeah I think Nvidia s future lays in AI GPU acceleration stuff if they can get that going it's going to be super interesting in the long term

@Psionic Roshambo AI assisted game creation is kinda already here, there was recently that AI that can turn any 2D image into a fully modeled 3D object, it's not perfect, but it's a starting point, beats starting from zero
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
before that there was one to generate a fully modeled scene from a 2D image
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
but most recently, there was one that actually generates a working unity scene with terrain and textures already set up that you can import right into unity, that's a huge time saver right there
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
and using LLMs to generate NPC dialogue and even dynamically generated quests is something i'm sure is already happening

will just take some time for games made using those things to be completed and released
