Nintendo's Next Smartphone Game to Feature Best Known Character

nintendologo.jpg

During Nintendo's third quarter financial meeting with investors, the company hinted at what fans can expect from its second smartphone game.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Nintendo posted a "sharp drop" in net profits for the quarter, but countered the disappointing news by confirming its second mobile title will feature one of its "best-known characters."

Along with this news Nintendo has now confirmed 12 million Wii U's have been sold, and over 20 million amiibo have been sold worldwide.

With this news in tow, it's time to speculate where Nintendo will be heading with its next mobile game, after the rather lackluster announcement of Miimoto earlier last year.

So the question is, do we begin seeing virtual console fearturing Mario on phones, or something new entirely?

I don't think Nintendo will release any VC title on mobile, they said it wouldn't provide the most (stable) optimal experience because of the lack of physical buttons some time ago.
A completely new title can be pretty awesome if it really make a good use of the touchscreen, and if there's not any (or a least not a lot of) in app purchases (*coughs* badge arcade *coughs*).
As for what character will be used, I don't think it will be Mario. They will probably use a slightly less popular character (Donkey Kong, Captain Falcon?) to collect some feedback, and then try to make a really big hit with a Mario game.
pokemon go?
Nintendo doesn't own Pokemon, they're only publishing the games. It's Game Freak / the Pokemon Company who owns it. So that's highly unlikely.

While a game with Falcon would be sweet, I don't know about it's appeal to casuals, as mostly more dedicated Nintendo fans and Smash Bros players know of him.

Err... They do own a third of the franchise...
Just like Creatures and Game Freak - they each own a third. Though Nintendo also has shares in Creatures iirc.

I might be wrong on this (even though I think I'm not), Nintendo DOES infact own Pokemon, Game Freak is merely the developer since game 1 (also Gamefreak isn't owned by Nintendo, they just work under them, they made a game for the playstation in 1999 I think, and a new one just about to be released on PS4, XBO and PC)

I don't think Nintendo has ever posted that info. All we know is they have some shares in Creatures, but obviously not a majority. Pretty sure Nintendo doesn't have any shares in Game Freak though.

2 years ago#61/3 belongs to Nintendo
1/3 belongs to Gamefreak
1/3 minus 2% belongs to the Pokemon company
2% belongs to whoever is in charge of the anime and dubbing and whatnot (funimation, was it?)

Also, Nintendo owns 54% of Gamefreak and (IIRC) majority stock in the Pokemon company as well.

can someone expert in stock markets check this ... does Nintendo owns majority of game freak stocks?

It's obvious to all of us: Ice Climbers! (In seriousness, it's gonna be Mario).

(Also, in case nobody got that: Nintendo has a habit of not really looking at their fans and drawing the wrong conclusions as a result.)

Well, iirc, Pokemon is owned by the Pokemon Company, which is owned by Game Freak, Creatures and Nintendo (and Creatures is a Nintendo "partner").
So while we all know probably every Pokemon game ever will be released by Nintendo (or at least published by Nintendo), Nintendo can't say "we'll release one game with characters from our popular series, Pokemon!" since they don't own the copyright.

All these companies are affiliated, yes even HAL and Intelligent Systems...
What is important is percentage of stocks nintendo owns of these companies to understand the level of freedom these companies have ...

  • Creatures
  • DeNA
  • DigiPen Game Studios
  • Game Freak
  • Genius Sonority
  • HAL Laboratory
  • Intelligent Systems
  • The Pokémon Company
  • WarpStar

Lol that's so incorrect... The Pokemon Company WAS FORMED by Nintendo, Creatuers and Game Freak...

My question was about the percentage ... someone said 54% someone else said 53% ...

Apart the way nintendo established to manage the IP between the companies, stocks owned by nintendo are important to undertstand wich level of freedom these companies have "against" Nintendo.

Thank goodness it's not a dumbed down, one-touch-control version of a beloved Nintendo franchise. "Super Mario Bros.: Go" (tap to jump endless runner), "Legend of Zelda: Pocket Edition" (freemium crapware) or "Donkey Kong Country Saga" (Bejewelled crap with different graphics) would literally make me cry.
Looks like my tears are not far away
