So for my birthday in March, I'm considering buying a New 3DS in order to take advantage of its benefits. However, with 10.4 and 10.5 out, I'm concerned that when it comes time to buy the N3DS, I'll get one above 10.3. If I were to buy a non-bundle N3DS via Amazon in March, what would my chances of getting one on 10.3 or lower be and how could I increase my chances?

Probably from 0% to about 10%. :/
Just get a 2DS. As long as it isn't the Yokai Watch or Pokemon R&B bundle it is guaranteed to be on 9.2 or less, so you don't even have to downgrade. I got the 2DS MK7 mundle for Thanksgiving and it came on 6.0.0. Now runs emuNAND 10.5 like a charm.

I already have a 3DS XL, so why would I want a 2DS? I want a New 3DS so I can take advantage of its higher specs.

There is a post on here on which serial numbers have which software versions. If you go to a store to buy it physically you can check the serials on the physical box and crossmatch .. giving you a higher 80-90% chance of getting a version of 10.3 or lower to be able to downgrade to 9.2 :)

The chance of getting an updated 3DS with 10.4 or 10.5 is very low for me.
I've bought a N3DS after six month of launch and I have found with 9.0

There are many of N3DS with 10.3 or lower, so no need to worry unless you look at the new edition Fire Emblem or Pokemon Red and Blue (which may have a chane being 10.4 or 10.5...

There hasn't even been a single confirmed case of a 10.0+ n3ds yet. What in the world makes people think a system released next month will be 10.5? (10.4 won't ever be seen given it was out only 7 days)

Probably the highest those two will be is 10.3, if that, since like games, they have to produce thousands of them months in advance to meet initial demand.

Yall making me worried now. I feel like i should just get a different edition N3DS instead of the 20th anniversary one.

Im probably gonna get the one i reserved then just wait to open it until some others can confirm what firmware they got on it.

Someone should make a thread detailing the firmware of New N3DS when they come out.

If this is true, I may thinking of trading one of my nephew N3DS Zelda Hyrule edition (already downgrade and install CFW) and pre order the Fire Emblem one so the 2 N3DS is more distinguishable.

I think it's a safe bet. They're not going to put the most recent firmwares that came out a week ago on a batch of consoles being made, it'd be a nightmare to have to do so, especially if they're already boxed and ready for shipping.

20th Anniversary Pokemon N3DS has most likely been in production long before 10.4 and 10.5 even came out. I think it may be safe to say that it'll come packaged with 9.9-10.3, which are all still safe to downgrade and whatnot. Probably the same with Fire Emblem, but I'm not too sure of that since I don't follow FE like I follow Pokemon.

Honestly, I don't even think 10.4+ consoles are even on the shelves yet.
There is still very slim chance of updated N3DS return to be put back on shelf (you know guys who failed downgrading, return it back to store while lazy employees not bother to check). Since there is no seal for N3DS, it's much easier for retailer to put back return onto shelves.

The thing to do is pre-order the console in-store and wait for day one reports of the firmware. Just cancel the pre-order if the news is bad. Most retailers give you two days to pick up the system. (edit: oh, he's talking about non-special edition. in that case there is a -500% chance the version will be 10.4+ lol)

I also hope the Hyrule Edition (released in Europe on March 24th) will come with 9.0-10.3 since I plan on getting one to replace my Majora's Mask Edition because the one I have doesn't have an IPS screen but a TN one :( (and therefore I also expect the Hyrule Edition to have an IPS screen)

There is a post on here on which serial numbers have which software versions.
Where is it? I just found something outdated (on gbatemp wiki).

If you live in the States, Wal*Mart might be your best bet to getting an older 3DS. I know most Wal*Marts (at least in my area) still have backlogs on older 3DS's that they can't sell. Mine still have the Black Friday New Super Mario from last year.

The hyrule editions have 9.9 on it. I just bought one the other day, and downgrade went smoothly (upgrade to 10.3 first)
