I've seen about 3 different topics requesting a translation patch for this game and the original GBC version was my first introduction to the Dragon Quest world. So after seeing the work other people have already done, I'm here to let you know that I'm going to take on this project.

My last project was the Final Fantasy IV translation Patch that I released on GBAtemp:

Final Fantasy IV DS Translation Project (GBAtemp)

I need a few things to be able to get to where I can start releasing the patches. I have a dump of the game already and have started minor translating via my hex editor, but I need a physical copy of the game to be able to test my patches with HANS.

I also need at least 2 other people to help out with the project. A translator, so we can quickly locate and translate the text we need. Also, I need someone to help with replacing the script via a hex editor. Preferably someone with ROM hacking, but if not I can train a tech savvy fan of with a lot of DQM GBC knowledge.

So in short, I need a Japanese translator, another ROM hacker/tech savvy geek and someone with a retail copy of the game they are willing to donate to the project.

If you have any questions, feel free to ask away and let's find some people willing to help pitch in for this project!

Willing to donate a cart but I'm a bit concerned about a few things since most translation don't really pan out.Since you've already got into this with a hex editor, How much text IS there in this game? I've not played any DQM yet (Though I'm a big DQ fan) and can't be sure if you get everyone that you'll not take years to get something out like the Digimon team

I can't guarantee that we'll have a full translation patch out within a certain period of time, but I've proved my knowledge and skills in ROM hacking with my Final Fantasy IV translation patch that was released for GBAtemp. As soon as I have the cart I'll start testing out the patches, in the mean time I've done some minor work while waiting for a partner to help at least with search & replace.

My goal is 3 months to have almost everything translated close to 100%. It could be done in much less if I get some support, but there's not too much text in the game. It will take a while to make sure all the text is in there properly and the pointers are pointing to the right spots and what not.

I will also need a few play testers for the patches, to check for bugs before release...but I want to release something hopefully once a week or so until the patch is done.

At the moment I'm laid up in bed for the next few months and won't be able to go out and do much, it's medical related. But I wanted to start another project and after seeing all the people who want it too, I decided to go for this one. Dragon Quest Monsters was my most favorite game as a kid and I played it with my little sis too, so I can't wait to make this available in English so everyone can enjoy it.

That would be a great help. I've contacted a few old friends already, including the ones I worked with on the FFIV patch, Raganook and Jeatin. Well see what happens, I'm sure GBAtemp will get excited over this and someone us will help and step up to the plate. Like I said, I can even train the right person for simple search & replace work with a Hex Editor. The translator is the most needed though, I can do the rest but I'm not a native speaker.

I'll be happy to be a play tester for the game if you want :D (I know the job isnt too useful, but hey, we get check out whether the game works or not, right?) I've done translations of command menus, spells, skills, items and monsters used in Dragon Quest 7 3ds, so I have *some* knowledge of how to translate xD I dont know how Terry's Wonderland is formatted in terms of text, however, as 7 was used in simple .txt formats.

Also, random question: are you gonna use the latest names of spells in the dq games, (Frizz, Zap etc.) or the older ones? (Blaze, Blazemore etc.)

I've played DQ 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, and Joker 2 btw. I never played the originals since they were made ages ago... I'm 16 :(

.
I'm planning on sticking with the newer versions, I've played almost all the DQ games...but I much prefer the newer spell localizations.

I wouldn't mind letting you be a playtester, I do need a few good people to make sure all the bugs are knocked out before I release any patch updates.

Well i was going to join the team posted in the other thread about DQM. But something fell through no idea.
If your still looking for help let me know ill do what i can. I actually already have this game dumped and extracted from before when i was working on it by myself.
I have already worked on translating a little of dqm2 back awhile ago, Then work on menu translation for dq7 as that was quite easy. While i currently do not have a physical copy , id be willing to buy one for the project if needed.

Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that has been cheering me on, the ROM hacking is coming along nicely. I've contacted Darkshowdo about collaborating on the project and I might be receiving a retail cart from a fellow GBAtemper. Hoping to post some screenshots soon and a early alpha patch within the next 2 weeks.

It's great that this game is being translated now. After playing DQMHJ2-Pro (with the non-pro with cheats on for the story line) and hearing about this coming out in Japan I've been hoping that this could receive a translation one day. Hope you get better results then his project went (C&D brought the project to a standstill, and when I had the chance to talk to him he said that the translation was done but that the text needed to be compressed and that he no longer had the free time/had too much time in between free times to make one for the game/patch).
Other things, have you brought this up on the Woody's forms yet? As that would be a good chance to find translator's for the game. And I expect that you are using the names from Dragon quest monster hunter joker 2 pro game too, sense one of the things that they advertised for this game is that it has all of the monsters from that game.
Last thing, anyone with a sky3ds card should be able too help out too you know (CIA too, but that involves repacking and reinstalling each time a patch comes out, which would be a lot trouble/waiting to do (of course CIA patches sometimes has a problem that a Hans user might not have so there that for debugging)).

I personally would like to first focus on a Hans Build of the translation. Mainly do to Hans being easy to test patches with.

But remember there will never be a actually romfs, Cia, or 3ds released by us. You will be responsible for patching your own game however this method will be.

Would this be the same for DQ8?
The dq7 was basic only for menu information. When you needed Script text it was still stored in hex.
As for it being in DQ8 never bother looking, cause by the time i was done with what i wanted on dq7. It was announced for NA and i dropped everything i was working on it and never released anything of my work. But i would assume the answer should be no as it is based off the IOS/Android version of DQ8 which coming from a ps2 game should have different formatting, Just due to engine differences.
