I suggest the maximum ban a person can receive is at least a year. There is no reason for Lifetime bans
on a forum's or in reality mostly anything. The average person die's at the age of 70 at least, so what's the point of life time banning? I can never understand that message on my xbox account when it say's "can't log in until 9999."

Like really, 9999??? hell they might as well have said 99999999999999999999999999 or until you're dead

Anyways People can easily change over months/years for the better, with that being said let kill this troll spirit of permanent banning. Now I know most of you guy's responses will be "Well we give out suspension, they should have learnt while taking those suspended days off". Yea but again, it takes a bit longer for "ALL OF US" to get right in certain areas, than most people.

The last sentence don't sound right but you know what I mean

Breaking the rules over and over again after being warned, suspended multiple times means they will just keep doing it and they don't belong on this forum.
Its the same thing in real life, life sentence in prison. The forum will not cater to member that can't be assed to read and follow the simple forum rules and instead are only looking to cause trouble to other members and staff.

I completely agree with getting rid of lifetime bans. Maybe make it a year or 2 to really have it teach them a lesson and yeah, as you say, people grow and change

As for IP bans this is something I am completely against and will never understand. I know it filters out a lot of spam bots or whatever but that's not the right way to go about it as opposed to, i don't know, maybe tighter captcha's upon registration or something like that. Cos IP addresses aren't really static anymore and a lot of the time I find myself in the awkward position where I'm calling someone over Google hangouts or whatever through a VPN (VoIP is mostly banned here), and GBAtemp has my VPN's IP address in it's blacklist so I can't get on there

I get it. I understand a long punishment, but a lifetime ban is a bit harsh. Some people like being on these forums. 6 months is a good ban time. Over the span of 6 months, I'm sure someone would understand the wronging they did. I can betcha they wouldn't do it again. Maybe even a year based on how much of a 'crime' they committed.

I totally agree. It just makes me want to change my IP which is unnecessary effort. You'd think they'd have learned their lesson just by getting threatened with an IP ban

because they haven't learnt or matured. :)
Yeah, some don't but thats not the case for everyone. So, not everyone should be punished. The only way to know if they learned and matured is if we give them another chance, correct? So, if they do bad again, ban em' for life. We won't know unless we give them a chance to prove themselves, which most sites don't do.

"I can never understand that message on my xbox account when it say's "can't log in until 9999.""
That is more likely a coding issue/simplification -- rather than some complex logic (or simple logic but still logic that would take several cycles and thus adds a lot of work when your userbase is in the millions) you do something that works by default and as you say by 9999 then if xbox live still exists (and the first xbox live has been gone for several years at this point) then chances are you will have been dead for a while, or hopefully enjoying your new existence as an AI.

As for the matter at hand I shall leave it to p1ngpong to come laugh at the notion. Suffice it to say though it is hard to get banned around here and if you have managed it then you almost certainly deserved a kicking, equally many can and have applied to come back after a while and many times it is granted -- active acts of contrition tending to go over better than simply waiting out a clock. Equally GBAtemp is great but it is still just a forum when all is said and done.

We have given people second chances after being banned for a long time many times in the past. It all depends on the circumstances and the reasoning behind the ban in question. Some people get unbanned and function fine here on their return and are better members for their time out, others sadly get rebanned after a while because they revert to their old ways. So it is pretty obvious you don't know how we do things around here if you think every ban is a "lifetime ban" and set in stone, therefore this thread is redundant.

Locked.
