So basically my charger for my gamepad broke and all I have is my pro controller. I want to still be able to game on my WII U until nintendo sends out a new one, but i'm not sure which games I should buy due to the fact they might require the gamepad, even in a minuscule fashion (such as needing it for only one small part of the game), so do you guys know any games that 100% DO NOT need the gamepad? My WII U is already set up so it has no need for the GP at least at the home screen.

Games I know for a fact work w/o it:
Hyrule Warriors
Batman: Arkham Origins

Community suggested ones:
(none yet)

Theoretically anything you can play in Off-Screen mode shouldn't require the Game Pad for anything else (since it'd defeat the point of Off Screen mode if you had to go back to the Wii U for those sections).

Most Wii U exclusives don't need it and a great example of it is Mario Kart 8. I'd advice to dodge crappy multiplatform games on the Wii U such as Sniper Elite V2 because it feels like an unfinished port with glitches, bugs and somehow it's only playable with the GamePad (makes no sense).

Need for Speed Most Wanted works great with the WUPC but I've noticed the game at times drops the framerate and thus far a slowdown is noticeable.

Smash Bros. The only things it is needed for is maybe uploading replays to youtube, or creating custom stages. You MIGHT need it to buy DLC content, not sure.

Any of the Wii/Wii U Super Mario Bros games don't require it do to the classic wiimote style setup.
Is the Game Pad or the Charger broken though?, as a 3ds charger is the same just different layout.

You can play the game without the GamePad but what yomiss out on are the Toad stages. Blowing/Tapping on the GamePad's mic just makes it easier.

Bayonetta baby. May as well play the best Wii U game.

Bayonetta won't run without the GamePad connected. You don't have to use it for anything, it just has to be present and detected for the game to run otherwise it throws up an error telling you to connect it, with no way to dismiss it without actually connecting the pad. I believe Bayonetta 2 acts similarly, but does let you get out of the error with a Pro controller.

better ask what games actually need it. The list would be much shorter XD
Splatoon and Super Mario Maker definitely need it
Super Mario 3D World needs it for a few levels, but you can finish like 95% of the game without it. ZombiU and Nintendo Land definately need it.

Some games I've noticed don't require the GamePad:
  • Mario Kart 8
  • New Super Mario Bros. U and New Super Luigi U
  • Yoshi's Woolly World
  • Super Smash Bros.
  • Super Mario Maker (you need the GamePad to make levels, but not to play them)
  • Super Mario 3D World

Some Games I know work Without Gamepad (connected or otherwise)

  • Pokkén Tournament
  • The Legend of Zelda Breath of the wild (Will notify about lack of gamepad connectivity, at least for the first boot, but the message can be dismissed with Pro controller)
  • The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD
Some games that DON'T function without gamepad present (even if playing the games can be done with other controllers)
  • Puyo Puyo Tetris (Will give a error message if Wii U gamepad connection is lost, can't be dismissed until connection is established again)
For now I personally have nothing else, I am interested in testing out these things. My Pokkén test was done by me because I wanted to make two-console setups for Pokkén, I have two consoles but only one gamepad. I can say personally that if any other person is in same bizarre situation as I am then yes, You can make a local tournament level 60fps pokkén vs. setup with just one gamepad, but two Wii U's.

Also I would like that people report games here that will work without gamepad even connected to the system. Some games such as my example of Puyo Puyo tetris refuse to function without gamepad present while others will work excellently.

I'd like to point out, that you would not be able to 100% the game without the gamepad. A few shrines require gyro, and therefor need the gamepad. You should be able to do story without gamepad though

That much is correct yeah - Super mario 3D world is the same way.

It also has the Capt. Toad levels you can't play without it.

For NSMB, some non gamepad controls might work you need to dl an update to allow the Pro controller to work. Certain releases might already be updated, I don't know.
