Hi so, I have recently been trying to set up an o3ds.
It is on 9.2 and has an NNID. I want to format the sysnand so that that nands wil be unlinked.
Because an NNID is associated with it, it wants to go online.

The emunand has this same NNID. Will there be a problem if I format whilst connected to the internet, will the NNID on the emunand still work? Or, will I simply have to log in again or something?
Or will my NNID be separated from that console until I reformat my emunand as well?

I tried searching but I couldn't really find much :) Maybe I am thinking about it too much, but I just want to be safe.
Thanks

the nnid will be left for emunand alone while sysnand will get formated and need( . . .?) a new one

ok, i just thought because the change has to connect to nintendo's servers, that the nnid will be deactivated (upon next connection to eshop or something) for the emunand too, since they both have the same unique id identifier right? :) (until i unlink them)
but thanks

no to deactivate a system would take real people on there end (to insure they have the correct console) they are not gonna pay a team to be ready to do that . . . so there is no deactivation they instead just let the account go cold

You will run into an error when attempting to connect to anythimg that requires NNID. 022-2634 or something i dont remember the exact error code.

The fix is fairly simple though.
- Backup emunand, backup its folder in sdmc:/Nintendo 3DS/ (or simply cut/paste it elsewhere on the card, faster.)
- In system settings on emunand, do a system format which will unlink the NNID
- In newly formatted emunand, go to NNID settings and link your NNID
- Restore emunand backup, and put its folder back in its place in sdmc:/Nintendo 3DS/

The reason for this is that formatting sysnand told Nintendo's servers that your NNID wasn't linked to your system anymore. So if you attempt to use it on emunand, it will throw an error as you are trying to log onto and use an NNID that isn't linked to your 3DS.
Doing these few steps refreshes the info on Ninty's servers and you can resume using your NNID on emunand as normal.

This happened to me several times too as I would backup my emunand and format it or do whatever to test things out, and then restore the backup only to be unable to use my NNID, haha.

so i was right in thinking there would be a problem? well, i only formatted sysnand. i took out the sd card so it couldn't delete anything.
if i can't log in in emunand, i will just relink the NNID in emunand?
so the advice wormdood gave was right or wrong?

Yep, if it gives you 022-2634 (which it most likely will), follow my step-by-step guide above to re-link it in emunand and it should work again.

@Ammako - i remember playing with the nand files ages ago that i could 'format' the 3ds and make it go through set up again.
although it would still have the same identifier, so the nands would still be linked.
anyway, i just had a thought, we can download system settings to 4.5... :)
and that will not have the call home format function right, so when i format my sysnand n3ds, but mset downgraded, i will not have this problem about nnid unlinking right?

or, is it a bad idea to system format with downgraded mset on n3ds? (i understand that with 2ds it is a bad idea, because there is no 3d slider that is required to be moved all the way up)

I have no idea if it will avoid the problem with the NNID unlinking.

You can however safely format when you have downgraded MSET. It's only a problem if you installed 4.x MSET on 2DS. (Haven't done it myself, but plenty of others have reported as much.)

ok sure, nnid didn't exist in 4.x so surely it will let me format offline + keep my nnid link :) i just need to back up a dsiware save first before i format.
but if i go to the data storage in system settings... all my games/content on sd card that my sysnand doesn't know about will get wiped...
even in the dsiware area?

- edit. ok as i thought, i didn't have to do the annyoing relink the nnid thing with emunand :)
so, yeah if you are going to unlink your nands and your sysnand has an nnid linked + emunand too, i recommend downgrading mset and then formatting.
it is much faster to downgrade (and upgrade it back if you want) instead of having to set up a new emunand temporarily.
but if you are on 2ds, don't try it :D
