Howdy folks.

Excited to see if the IOSU exploit comes to pass, but realize it takes time and thankful for those who work so hard to bring these to us.

I have a fresh 5.4.0 (I assume) WiiU in the box, Christmas gift. The bundle with Splatoon And Super Smash.

I'd love to hook it up today but obviously don't want to update to 5.5.0 or auto-anything.

Is there a concise guide anywhere of the steps I can take now, to get my WiiU operational and ready, and install any necessary safeguards for it even though I'm just using it as stock as I patiently wait to see if the new exploit emerges?

Maybe others are in the same boat and want to play today, but just have their system ready for next steps.

Much thanks to all, happy holidays.

I don't connect mine to the internet. I just use an old router disconnected from the internet and self-host exploits using Mongoose. That's by far the safest method.

When it asks to connect to the internet, just press B to bypass it.

Is 5.5 not supported by this new ISOU exploit?

One of the old adages is always stay on the lower firmware until you are sure, as you can never go back.

I'd like to stay on 5.4.0 until 5.5.0 is proven as 100%. If staying on 5.4.0 ends up providing more flexibility, I'm there. No sense in me connecting and updating to 5.5.0 today.

JUST WAIT. It hasn't been released; we don't know all the details.

If you want to play today, don't set up your internet configuration and you'll be safe.

Well, there's no kernel being released for 5.5 so you'd have to wait for that, so I suggest staying on 5.4, like me.

If you have a dynamic IP address, it stops working once the IP changes.

Not if you set up an opendns updater on a PC thats always on your network. That being said, I still trust tubehax dns over opendns. I use opendns network wide configured in the router so if my wii drops its tubehax dns I have a safety net.

Understood, thanks. My own experiences are that although OpenDNS does allow you a little more selectivity in blocking specific servers to prevent updates so I could connect to do a successful wipe/reset, (second hand F/W 4.0.3E) I still can't do anything useful as it still won't let me retrieve my N Network ID anyway unless I allow an update so I'm pretty much donalded anyway!

Honestly, it doesn't matter hykem's exploit will run on 5.5 so you might as well have some fun before iosu and play some online, I don't think you can do anything on 5.4 that you can do on 5.3.2.

When your IP changes, there is a small but non-zero time between the IP change and when you update opendns.
If your PC or router checks every 5 minutes, expect an average of 2.5 minutes.

If the console happens to make a DNS query in that time, it will get the original IP address.
It does not need enough time for the full download, just long enough to make a single DNS lookup.

There are holes in your safety net.

Please excuse my ignorance but AFAIK it's commonplace to have a static IP address these days, at least in the UK.

French ISP Orange (nearly 50% of French connections) is on dynamic IP.
Full bullshit.

I've installed a smmal updating program which updates OpenDNS though :)
