I heard about this on a Discord chat (to be more precise, the /r/splatoon Discord chat) a bit ago and ever since I've been hyped for it.

I'm not quite fully updated on it though, and I'd appreciate some info on what steps I should to take to make sure I:

A. Don't lose 5.5.0
B. FULLY block updates
C. Still be able to play online (I play Splatoon a lot)
and D. Get anything needed for the exploit

I have OpenDNS currently blocking the following:

I plan on setting up CCProxy at some point -- but I'd enjoy a TXT filter that doesn't block multiplayer, and, if possible, eShop. I say if possible, because I'm unsure if eShop is able to push out sys updates (even though that sounds stupid).

Please inform me on what I can do to help with the above steps listed -- do I need a SD card or USB device/are they supported, do I need a game, etc. etc., and things I should change to what I'm going to do/have already done.

As a Wiibrew lover, this is something I've been waiting for a long time. Thanks a lot if you can help me, I'm really hyped for this even if it gets delayed.

just as a note:

the 107.211.140.065 DNS is the "Tubehax" DNS which blocks the update servers as well.

it also has the side effect of blocking YouTube (since it was an exploit for the YouTube 3DS app), so if you use YouTube on the Wii U like me, then you might want to try something else (like blocking domains at your router).

Well, if you're paranoid (like me), you should also...
  • Turn off Automatic Software Downloads
  • Turn off Standby Functions
  • Delete all internet connections
  • Reenter yours using Manual Setup

I'm very paranoid. Thank you.

I've used Tubehax before (until my 3DS updated orz), but it doesn't really matter for me. I have a Apple TV so I mainly just watch stuff on there lol

I just disconnect my wiiu from internet and I will host the exploit in my android. We dont know all the server adresses and something like the 3DS browserhax patch might happen

If you're even more paranoid than me, you could write one more character to the SSID on the Wii U when not playing online. And disconnect your Wii U from power.

yeah but after a lot of browsers got soft-bricked thanks to the infamous Nintendo patch. Maybe Nintendo has another update server, one that TubeHax doesn't have again.

2 things to do:
a. Disconnect your WiiU from the internet.
b. Don't buy WiiU physical disks. Nintendo has Trojans inside their disk.

...things are not working like you are thinking, you are forcing DNS therefore you will not connect to nintendos servers but youtubes. you only would have a problem youtube starts hosting nintendos updates.

Should I consider updating to 5.5.0 if I'm on 5.4.0 currently? 5.5.0 seems to be current firmware, so OTA update won't get me into trouble?!

iCEQB: good point, thank you.

Stay on the lowest possible FW...even if the exploit works on the latest FW.
God knows what might come up once a release is near.
