When it comes to OpenDNS and Tubehax DNS, it's unclear which one people prefer. Most people use Tubehax DNS it seems, while some users claim that it didn't work for them. One thing to know about Tubehax DNS is that it's hosted by Smealum, and can be shutdown at anytime. So openDNS may be a little more secure on staying up when you need it since you created it under your own IP.

I personally have a static IP which makes things easier. Having a Dynamic IP means that it will change and never be the same, which can be risky. I once read that tubehax DNS is best for dynamic IP, but unsure about this user's speculation. Maybe it's because OpenDNS requires the use of a PC program and your computer to be on. Be careful if you're using a dynamic IP and also using OpenDNS.
You can test if you have static or dynamic IP HERE

Both are very easy to set up, though Tubehax is the easiest. What DNS do you prefer and why?
Under a static IP, I'd say both are reliable.

There's two kinds of updates that I'm trying to better understand how they're triggered, and if it's possible to disable them.

Update type 1: Installs in the background without you knowing automatically against your will, the most feared type of update. This is new and exclusive to the Wii U, not seen on the 3DS.

Update type 2: Downloads an update popup/nag that comes up every now and then to ask you to update, which you can easily say no to so it's not so scary. In case of the 3DS, update type 2 can ONLY be triggered if you fold your 3DS into standby mode. So I wonder what can trigger this to happen on the Wii U.

This guide warns you to turn off "quick start menu" after updating to 5.3.2 or else. But why, does that stop automatic updates (update type 1) and is there any further ways to prevent automatic updates? I'd much rather block their servers AND disable automatic updates (Update type 1) to be safe. I wouldn't want the DNS to not function one day, and update type 1 will occur when I could've prevented it by disabling something.

From what we know now, users can only tell you something like "several users have had their Wii U automatic update, and I don't know how/why it happens and what to do to prevent it. And to top it off, some users claim the DNS trick didn't work out. So we need a better understanding here.

Even with a dynamic IP, your IP isn't necessarily changing all the time depending on your ISP and how you're using your internet connection. Some dynamic IPs only change when you reboot your modem (and anything that would cause this, like power failure). OpenDNS has a PC app which updates your IP address in their database, though it does so infrequently and there doesn't seem to be a setting to change the frequency.

Generally speaking I leave my systems offline, and disable standby features, unless I'm actively using them online, then when I'm done I turn them off again. I do this despite having a static IP address. I think there are enough precautions that you can take that would make OpenDNS as safe as any other solution.

Your IP address cannot change while you're using your internet connection without it disconnecting you. You won't suddenly start downloading the system update during a game of Mario Kart simply because your IP changed. That just won't happen

My two cents

OpenDNS is an update timebomb.
Various people on this forum were updated accidentally by relying on the OpenDNS method.
How did they get updated, I thought "Silent automatic" updates only happen with stuff like quick start menu and standy. And what if Tubehax DNS is also a ticking timebomb too. I wonder if those users who got updated, had a dynamic IP. Ex: being safe one day, then the next day suddenly having another IP assigned to them.

Overall, we gotta get to the bottom line of what DNS is the safest and most reliable.

Edit: So far 2 votes on tubehax, I personally don't trust OpenDNS as much.
I'm getting my low firm Wii U console tomorrow, two things that scare me are updating via disc, and properly blocking Nintendo's servers. But nothing is more terrifying than having your system update automatically. So there's no ways to prevent auto updates otherwise huh. Then what's quick start menu do?

Edit2: It's now tied, two on OpenDNS and two on Tubehax. Looks like both are reliable, but I still feel like one is better and more reliable than the other.

As far as I know, disabling the standby functions keeps it from updating automatically. It also disables the quick start menu which you use to boot directly into installed games. Not a big loss

So with the standby function disabled, the all so feared "Automatic silent" updates will never occur right? The only type of update you'll experience from then on is the update popup/nag, which is usually triggered by doing something specific (How it works on 3DS)

I just need to get one thing straight, something we all need to understand. How does the automatic (Installs in the background against your will) type of update start, and is there a way to completely disable it. Leaving only the update nag possible, which isn't scary at all since you can easily say no.

This guide warns you to turn off quick start menu or else. But does that stop automatic updates and is there any further ways to prevent automatic updates? I'd much rather block their servers AND disable automatic updates (Update type 1)

Edit: Updated the main post to include the topic about how updates work

OpenDNS.

I use my Wii U to watch YouTube in my TV, and TubeHax blocks everything Youtube. -,-
If only there could be a server that didn't block that site...

basicaly to have quick star menu On you need to have standby downloads ON, which is incredibly risky with open dns like peple said a power failure or you dns provider decides to just change their ip from time to time and you will be updated in standby mode.

Ah I see, just as user Kohmei mentioned. So it's confirmed, there's an absolute way to prevent the worst type of update (Automatic update). I'm surprised this isn't mentioned in any of the guides. Standby mode is the biggest enemy on the Wii U. I'll be going to settings to disable that immediately, then I have nothing to worry about. Then the only type of update to ever occur are update nags which aren't even scary to me, and are only triggered after you do something specific.

So to use a DNS + Disable standby, what's to fear? Automatic updates aren't gonna be happening, AND you're blocking the servers. Then everything from then on becomes more like the 3DS, where it's only the simple nags. And people on the 3DS Scene took it too serious about blocking servers, update nags are easy to cancel out. There's usually a way to remove them too.

Edit: Tubehax has a winning lead of 6 to 4, maybe it's because of it's simplicity? Or is it because it actually IS more effective?

well tubehax only downside is youtube acess really since tubehax isnt ip dependant so your always safe with it, but yeah with those 2 things Off even if open dns fails your console will only start downloading and installing the update when you turn it on so you can pull the plug and such, still tubehax dns is so much more secure, if you dont use youtube on your wiiu is basicaly a nobrainer.

Oh okay so disabling standby only prevents automatic updates while it's off, but automatic updates can still occur on the main menu and there's no way to turn it off. I'm scared of the future of Tubehax's DNS, hope it doesn't go haywire one day and screw us all.
So basically automatic updates can't be prevented, and it's guaranteed to occur when your'e connected to the internet so you're pretty much forced to use a DNS that blocks their servers. One minute that the DNS isn't working will be the end of you.

Did you mention pulling the plug? How would you react fast enough to pull it and expect it? Sounds dangerous to me!
I wish there was a sign, indicating that the update is downloading in the background. Do we test the DNS by going to Eshop and see if it connects? Or is there a better way to test?

you dont need to react lol if you have no blocks when you turn your wiiu on it will show a manu saying new update avaliable and it will show the download in progress and the install progress, and its never really to fast becuase wiiu download speed and nintendo servers arent fast also you cant even shut off the console or say nowhen that starts so your chance is pulling your router power to interrupt the download or your wiiu plug, those are why we block serves because nintendo forces you with no chance to say no to updates.

Ah I see I see, at least there's some kind of indication of an update going on. But there's still one other problem, automatic updates while on the main menu. There's no way to see it downloading in the background and it'll just hit you. Or does it also bring you into a separate menu where it shows the progress and you can pull the router/Wii U power plug?

DNS is easy enough to use, I don't see how it doesn't work for a few users. I can't imagine it ever messing up either. I'm gonna side with Tubehax's DNS, we've got a winner! 8 to 4 votes now. (I'm not gonna vote)

when you are on the menu you wont see the download progress but when it starts installing it will pull the menu away and show you the progress bar since wiiu cant install the updates without stopping the entire wiiu so you have less time to react and this time only pulling the wiiu plug will stop it since it already downloaded it all.

That's some good info, gives me some insight on how the update will work when it happens. I wonder, if you enter any app while it's downloading would it disturb the download and the download resets to 0%, or stays at the same % forever. Either way, if I see my Wii U show a black screen out of nowhere, I'm gonna pull that plug SO fast. I'll have to keep the console next to me at all times. I'm sure it will give me a clear enough sign that it's about to enter the system update. Nintendo isn't THAT rude to just SUDDENLY and instantly be on the update screen. I'm sure it'll have to take it's time to load up too on a black screen. I just hope I don't brick my console even though the update didn't even start it's install progress yet.

Either way, users SHOULD be warned to get ready to be a ninja!

Oh that's true. In that case, how will you get the infection (Update) off you once it's 100%. It will continuously attempt to update even without an internet connection. Do we just format the system to get rid of it overall? I'd do that once I knew I had this on my system, then wait til I can use a different DNS or something.

Isn't there a way to limit how much bandwidth your devices use on your network through the router? If so, we should limit the wii U to lower speeds or 0 KBps if possible. I was reading about this the other night, but never thought to use it for the Wii U's connection. Edit: This feature is called QoS and only some routers can do this.

if you limit the wiiu to 0kbs then why not just delete the connection settings?lol Since nothing will work regardless.

You can delay an install if you press B to eneter vwii directly then on vwii go to wiiu menu and then quickly go to the bowser and use the download remover homebrew app i know alot of people have removed already downloads at any % updates with this.

Lmao sometimes I don't even think xD
There's no way to limit download speeds though, only upload speed according to this page I read.

That method is golden, something me and a lot of other people should know. I wonder why it's not on the definitive hacking guide at least.
What's this download remover homebrew app called? It's a must have for anyone. I'll be sure to use it every now and then to be sure I don't have any updates downloaded. Might as well wait til you know for sure though. I appreciate this info and the constant replies. All my research has never came across info like this.
