Change that Windows 10 to *nix/*BSD and you're good to go. Realistically, I'd go back to Windows 7 or 8, I don't know how 10 is behaving these days.

It sounds like a very decent laptop, probably exaggerating the configs a bit. I don't play games on PC much, and I don't think a laptop should be a PC gaming platform. Just look up the heaviest(performance-wise) games you want to play and give Can-You-Run-It a try. Look at the recommended specs for each of them.

Keep in mind your laptop will heat up by a lot if you start pushing it with emulators like Dolphin. Also, there's no point in posting stuff about the wireless card and warranty. This question would also be more at home in the hardware section.

Shit laptop.

In all seriousness.
That's quite a neat machine you got!
Should last quite a while.
As for games, mine runs Bioshock Infinite on Low, and it's an old one from late '07.

(If there's any mod reading this, please move the thread to the hardware sub forum?)

To be honest, the laptop's specs are beastly. It can easily last like 4-5 years.
You should be able to emulate stuff quite easily (depending in the software)
Cheers!

Windows 10 is actually pretty capable and bug-free these days, finally. And it's more user-friendly than Unix or BSD, he should be fine with his current operating system

Yeah, sure i'd be fine if I could just figure out how to get my xbox 360 controllers to connect, they don't seem to like windows 10 lol. The device drivers take when I plug the cord into my wireless controller but thats it, I can't use the controller to play any games :( am I doing something wrong?

OP might want to play older games, which may not work on Windows 10 as well as they do on 7/8/8.1, where people have probably come up with good workarounds. That's why I said "realistically, I'd go back to 7 or 8/8.1".

Keep windows 10 losing out on dx12 is a waste especially with an invidia chip.

I guess. Not sure if he plans on playing newer games, though, but good point.

Don't forget 10 is still spyware-ridden. You can still block the telemetry updates on 7 and 8/8.1. Win10 a shit.

Thats because the charge cable can only be used for charging not for connectivity
You need a wireless dongle to go along with it

Thats a knockoff but should work fine

Well, ok, I personally find it more user friendly because I'm not very comfortable around terminal/command lines yet

No need to use them on the latest versions of popular distros. Most come with a graphical package manager, a friendly DE, etc. Take a look at *buntu, Debian and Mint. Debian's installation process, if you don't choose the live USB/CD but instead the installation media, doesn't look so friendly, sure, but anyone attempting to install an operating system has at least basic understanding of every step it goes through. The others are very read-here-point-and-click-like.

Give Xubuntu/Lubuntu a try. Ubuntu has a history of collecting data through Unity's search feature, so I won't recommend that, not solely because of the most likely removed(or disabled by default, since there's an option hidden around the DE's settings) telemetry, but also because I don't like Unity very much. Xubuntu comes with XFCE, Lubuntu, with LXDE. Mint has some preinstalled DE options, including Cinnamon, which I believe is a fork of GNOME.

Don't let the desktop environment influence your distro of choice, though, since you can always replace them with other full-fledged DEs or even window managers, bars, etc. For new users, I'd go with a familiar-looking distro, then switch to alternatives after getting familiar with the rest of the Unix environment.

In any case, there's no need to use the terminal nowadays, except if you encounter a problem that has no other solution than one using a tty. That'd be no different from your standard Windows MBR failure, since you'd either have to use an install media to run "bootrec /fixmbr" or a live/standard Linux distro install to install lilo and run "sudo lilo /dev/sdX -M mbr". Not sure if those are the right commands now, sorry. Not the point anyways.

Seems like a really nice laptop if I dare say so. Though as is the case with a lot of laptop GPUs that 960M is quite a bit weaker than actual 9xx series GPUs.

Lol, why downgrade, eh?

Refer to:

EDIT: Editing to reiterate my hate towards Windows 10's telemetry and other scary "hey, I uninstalled this program because it's not compatible with winders"-like "features".

Windows 10 a shit.

Great laptop. It's a shame it came with Windows 10. I'm not saying Windows 10 is bad (although I've encountered way more bugs with it than any of my friends, haven't had this many problems since early Vista :(), but it's nice to have the option of downgrading for free if you don't like it. I have my own repair business so I had to upgrade in order to be familiar with it.

I'm curious what the timings are on the RAM. You can check on the speed tab of CPU-Z.

If you're planning on gaming (which seems likely, since you opted for a graphics card), you're better off with Windows because you get DirectX. However, most games won't be using DirectX 12 for awhile, since it's only available on Windows 10.
