Hi guys, so I am buying myself a new Nintendo 3DS XL from eBay and was really interested in playing more then just one game. It's not a problem if I buy 1 original game for like 40$ but more it's just too much. I only buy steam games for my PC and when it's on sale LOL. So I was reading a lot about those flash cards etc.

Can someone give me more accurate info on them? What type to buy, where and so on? I was reading that the good ones are Gateway and Sky3DS? What is the best one to buy for my use? I wish to play Pokemon games: X, Y, Omega Rubin, Alpha Saphir etc. Maybe also some other but those are primary for me.

I wish to be sure if I buy this stuff that I can really play it, get the ROM's and not waste my money since something was not compatible since the new software or something like that. I'm a total noob at this, so please advise me, thanks.

If your firmware is equal or less than 9.2 you can use a free CFW to install games via cia format.

If your firmware is 9.3 or above (more likely) the only option is to buy a Sky3ds.

Can you speak in English please? Not like I understand anything. Where to check this etc? I still don't own it, I want to buy one if it's possible to play the things I want. So is there a description of the new 3DS XL and what's is his current firmware etc or what? Thanks

He's actually talking quite clearly, it's just you who don't know what he's talking about =p

First, for "9.2", 9.3", etc, he's talking about the firmware version. If you already have the console, you can check that on the main screen of the system setting (top screen, on the bottom right). If you don't have it already, well, you can try to check the serial before buying using this list to see what's the firmware installed on the 3DS.
Even if you can check the serial, you're practically sure that the console will come with 9.3 or more recent anyway, since only the first ones came with 9.2 or less.

Why does the firmware matter? Because if you're on 9.2 or less, you can install a CFW (Custom FirmWare). With it you can install "backups" downlo... created from the games you bought, for free. You can also buy a Gateway flashcart , which is more noob proof, but not really cheap (~70$).
If you're on 9.3 or more recent, you can buy a Sky3DS flashcart , which only allows you to play "backups" from cartridges. It's expensive (~100$) but it's the only solution for the consoles on 9.3-10.3 atm.

I don't think he used any super technical terms a new user on this forum would be unfamiliar with. CIA is a format used to install titles to a 3DS system. You can check the Nintendo 3DS XL firmware by version number thread to know which systems you can buy that are likely to come with up to 9.2 firmware.

From there, just follow the tutorials on how to get started on the world of CFW.

Oops, seems @TheKawaiiDesu beat me to it. :P

Let me assure you, he is speaking in English. After figuring out your firmware version, start by reading this thread. That thread links out to more threads that link to even more threads. Be sure to read 'em all if you don't want to end up doing the wrong thing and brick your 3DS.

I also have a very honest question for the OP here. Since you posted your thread in the right forum section, did you happen to see the stickied threads at the top of the page? The one I linked you to is right there with a nice big red label. I'm just wondering if you saw it and posted anyway or didn't see it at all? I'm trying to figure out why new people don't read the stickies. Again, I'm just honestly trying to hear your feedback, am not calling you out or anything.

Sky3ds isn't the only solution, there is another one if he's on 9.3+: Buy the games ;)

People are lazy. They either read all the things or create an account and ask. I think that's the most simple and accurate explanation for it and not much can be done about it other than force people to read some threads before they can start posting on a forum. That's not a good way at all to approach the problem, but the only one I know of.

But that'd require money. Not money, no! Never! Can't be done. THE HUMANITY!!!

Yupz, my message count of 3611 are only repeated questions/posts of other peoples questions/posts i was to lazy to read or search for :)
You see, it's for the collection of (i call it) badges i get, Nintendo also checks GBATemp and that's where they got the idea of badges!
I don't even know what i read, as soon as i read a post, i have forgotten it (same for my own posts), also to lazy to subscribe to threads, it's just so much easier to make a new one :) [/Sarcastic]

I was talking about the OP, who is a new user, not you. Sorry for the misunderstanding.

The only problem is how much overpriced the games are, you seriously think a 3DS game is worth 35€ (+Shipping Cost) hell no...
I can get games like GTA V, Witcher 3, Fallout 4 and more fore less then 35€ and those are some big title games for PC market that had a lot of work put in them. And id gladly pay for things that are worth the money, but I hate when someone wants to rip me off...

And for the questions, I was thinking how its easier like this. Since I have googled this subject the last 5 days and there are so many cards, so many options and so many comments as: This won't work if it is not that or not with those bla bla. Like I understand that. So isn't it easier for all mighty gurus like you guys to answer a simple question with a yes or no? I really don't get what's the big deal.

For example like this, if I get:
This Nintendo from eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/111822683461?_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649&ssPageName=STRK:MEBIDX:IT
And I also buy this card here: http://www.njuskalo.hr/nintendo/3ds-sky-kartica-prodaji-oglas-13775543

Will I be able to DL the ROM's Pokemon X, Y, Omega Rubin, Alpha Saphire and play it at it's full potential? Or are there other problems?

A answer like yes 100% with no problem is not so hard, or we don't know or no... Simple is it not?

Sky3DS will work with all models of 3DS, so yes it will work. However you won't be able to play many/any new releases and you can't play any eShop-only games.

But if you get a 9.0-9.2 firmware one you can play every game ever released for the 3DS. I think you can still play emulated games (GBA, GB, GBC, SNES) on a higher firmware console but they will play with a better frame rate on a <=9.2 console. (Not certain of this).

So before you do anything you should see what firmware you get. No sense spending a lot of money on a Sky card and then having no use for it. If you have money to burn them you should pay extra for a console that says in the description it is 9.2 or less, not burn money on Sky rubbish.

Your answer was given in the early posts on this thread. No one here claims to be or probably is an almighty guru, we're only pointing out you would've gotten your answer way faster from reading sticky threads. One of the first things that will pop up about flashcards for the 3DS is whether they work on the latest version or not. This is all in a very informative wiki page, that has links to other wiki pages with information on listed flashcarts. FAQs and other pages with useful information if you're a newbie are linked in the READ FIRST thread.

It isn't about it being hard or not, nor is it about wasting time answering simple questions. The sticky threads, FAQs and tutorials are there to keep the forum from becoming a chaotic mess of "how do I get CFW on 10.3?", "can someone help me set up emunand?" and "I want to pirate games" threads. Sorry if it looks like a personal issue or anything of the sort. Think of it as a way to keep the subforums as productive as possible.
