Homebrew Lost access to Homebrew Launcher through Ironhax after updating from firmware 10.2 to 10.3, advice?

Just to give a bit of background:

I've been following smealum's work, as well as the general development of 3DS Homebrew, ever since smealum announced Ironfall could be used as an entry point for 3DS homebrew. I downloaded the game, along with the original 1.1 update, before it removed from the eShop. Then I installed Ironhax once it was available and have kept it up-to-date ever since. Naturally, I've also downloaded a wealth of useful homebrew apps, as well as mashers' more customizable Homebrew Launcher with grid layout. I never really bothered with other HBL entrypoints though, as Ironhax seemed like the most convenient one for me without sacrificing any system functions.

More recently, I also updated my system's firmware from version 10.1 to 10.2. I was debating whether or not to do so, but since Ironhax worked fine on 10.2 and I wanted normal access to the eShop, I updated Ironhax and the firmware and homebrew still worked fine. Seems like my decision was wise, as the eShop is now blocked for systems below 10.2 even using the Hans app.

With the 10.3 system update, I was again considering updating my 3DS, partly for normal eShop access, but more because I realized you can't seem to access any ingame shops (for DLC and such) on outdated firmware. Just a little while ago, I followed smealum's instructions and installed the latest payload for Ironhax first, ensured the Ironhax still worked, and then updated the system... only to find that choosing my Ironhax save file always returns me to the home menu with an error.

Doing some research I found this post which makes it clear what I may have done wrong: when I reinstalled Ironhax (in a separate save file) I chose the 10.2 firmware for the installation. Looking back at smealum's twitter posts, it seems the 10.1 Ironhax payload worked in 10.2 fw, and last time I may have reinstalled Ironhax after updating to fw 10.2. When I reinstalled Ironhax earlier today, I guess I assumed I'd need to choose my current fw, but it seems I needed to choose 10.3 fw instead. And clearly the 10.2 Ironhax payload doesn't work in 10.3 fw...

Anyway, am I totally screwed out of accessing homebrew through Ironfall, or is there some way to resolve this? Looking at the other exploits available, it seems that the only alternatives for me (since my system is an old 3DS) are Ninjahax or Oot3dhax. I do have an OoT3D card already, but without another hb entrypoint I guess I'll need a gamecard save dongle to inject the hacked OoT save. Would using the save dongle work for installing oot3dhax on an old 3DS on 10.3 firmware, and if so where should I get the device from? Also, if I can set up oot3dhax, could I then reinstall Ironhax since I still have the original 1.1 version of Ironfall? Accessing hb through a digital game would be more convenient after all.

I'm already feeling annoyed about losing access to all my homebrew apps, so I'd really appreciate any help I can get with this.

you can, indeed, use a save dongle (like powersaves) to put oot3dhax on the game card. as for where to get them, someone else can help you with that.

however if you have a DS flash cart and a DS/DS lite (3DS/DSi doesn't work), you could cut off the tab or replace the board in the game card and use http://3dbrew.org/wiki/DSaveManager.

if you have an alternate 3DS system with homebrew, you can use that too.

finally, you can use this to fix ironhax.

Quick question, if I cut off the OOT tab where could i find the save with the latest payload?

Thanks for answering my questions! Unfortunately I don't have any DS(i) flash carts (only ever really did "internal" homebrew or mods on my consoles) and I only have one 3DS with any homebrew, so I guess I'll look for a save dongle online. Power saves was something I was considering getting for my 3DS at some point anyway, so maybe I'll get one and use it for backing up saves as well.

If I were to be completely honest, I would wait until Cyber Monday to buy a 2DS. They come on fairly old firmware according to some sources and I do not believe their firmware has been updated. According to Jack_Sparrow (An actual GBATemp User who had the same problem) they will go for around $60. Even if the design isn't completely great, they will give you more access than just homebrew (CFW and other items). If you do not have access to purchase such items I do not know what to tell you if you have no other working exploits. Just make sure the copyright date says anything 2014 or below as I am pretty sure system update 9.3 came out in 2015. According to my knowledge, the latest model for 2DS came out with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire which was 2014. But double check to make sure. I know that they must update the copyright date if they put in recent firmware and if it is anything higher than what came out in the copyright year I would take it back and file a complaints that violates the meaning of "New". I hope that I helped.

If this is in response to my original message, I do have OoT3D so it seems like installing Oot3dhax might be my best bet for restoring access to homebrew. And if the "Action Replay PowerSaves Pro" available on Amazon would help with that, it's notably cheaper than a 2DS, even on sale.

To be honest, I'm pretty satisfied with just having all my homebrew apps coexisting with the official 3DS firmware. Then again, exactly what benefits do you get with custom firmware? From what I understand about cfw it sounds like you can customize way more with your 3DS system and do many more things then you could with homebrew on official firmware, but at the cost of lots of extra hassle to get everything (including basic system features) functioning properly. I'm just not sure how much benefit I personally would get from owning any sort of 3DS system with cfw.

I understand your position. But if you were to purchase a 2DS with firmware less than 9.2 or at 9.2 (more common than you think), and then update it to 9.2 if not already, you could use themehax or OoThax or whatever you like, you could install rxTools for free, and get RxTools emunand (like sysnand but loads differently) on 10.3 and have access to homebrew on your actual system version, (plus some homebrew come in CIA format which can be installed on emunand) you could have all of your homebrew apps in one folder. Although, not all homebrew come in CIA format. It is up to you but I thought I would give it a try.

I only got into 3DS homebrew when I heard online about a super easy method to access it through Youtube and Ironfall. I believe those exploits were developed after any way of accessing Flashcards & Custom Firmwares were already patched out of the system. Hence, as you can imagine I really don't have much knowledge on the topic and some of what you said just flew right over my head. :P

If you could explain in simple terms what benefits an outdated 3DS system with cfw has over an up-to-date 3DS system with access to homebrew, maybe I could understand why you feel I should get a 2DS. ;)

ok so homebrew lets be honest is mostly emulators and roms if that interest you then you will love the fact that not only can you install homebrew directly to your system (witch by the way will give your emulators more power for faster smother emulation) but you can also install and play 3ds roms in .cia format to your system as well as vc gb/gba/gbc/nes/dsiware/3dsware games also in .cia format
as well have an emunand (emulated copy of your system) that you can update independently from your system firmware (you never really update your system this way) so you never need to worry about loosing your hbc access again and can always access eshop, game updates and other online features cfw also holds benefits over 3ds flashcards but i wont get into that

basically its everything a 3ds flashcard and hbc is and more

Well, I have an update to share for this topic: it seems my little sister's 3DS (which she hasn't touched in over a month going by the activity log) is still on version 10.1 firmware. Now, I don't know much about homebrew exploits other than Ironhax (she doesn't have Ironfall downloaded on her system) and Tubehax (I believe it was patched server side?), but I think both browserhax and homemenuhax were patched in the 10.2 system update. So perhaps I could use one of those other exploits to get access to the homebrew launcher on her system, then install oot3dhax to my OoT3D card, and finally reinstall Ironhax on my 3DS. It's kind of a long-winded way to go about fixing my mistake, but it should work... I think.

Of course, I'm having a hard time making sense of whatever's on the homemenuhax GitHub page, and when I try to scan the QR code on the browserhax page with her 3DS, I get booted out of the browser with a message saying I need to update the system to access the browser. It'd be a huge help If anyone with more knowledge of these two exploits can tell me if either still works on an old 3DS with 10.1 firmware, and if so, how I should go about using either.

Browserhax won't work anymore unless it was an N3DS or you had done some tinkering on your router to redirect some addresses to different ones on Nintendo's servers so it wouldn't give you the update nag. Given you have already seen the nag, there's nothing else you can do about browserhax.

Menuhax can only be installed if you already have another entry point available on that system.

So I'm totally unable to use either of those exploits? Oh well, I guess I'll go ahead and grab one of those save dongles online. I've been playing around with all those save editors recently, and I've been wanting use one for my New Leaf save... so the sooner I get access to homebrew apps for save management, the better.
