Can it play nds games like the real ones can if so does are they stable as long as you have a fast class 10 micro sd? Any disadvantages adding/deleting roms?
All R4 cards nowadays are clones and there are about a million different ones so it really depends on which one you mean.
The best one is the R4i Gold from r4ids.cn and pretty much all the other ones are crap. They do however play games fine so if you can get it really cheap (sub-$10) it does the job.
Is there a way to know which r4 clone you have so you can get the right wood fw? Can I use it in my dsi or will the fw 1.4.5 block it?
Check the website written on the cartridge to know which cart it is, the website should also say if it's DSi 1.4.5 compatible.
Then you can try this website which has downloads for most carts: http://www.linfoxdomain.com/nintendo/ds/
Okay need the frimware it shows R4DSLL.com on the bottom can't find the right one in the link. here is a picture of it just in case.

UPDATE: I can only play off of my action replay with it but pokemon heartgold freezes every 20mins (all others work fine so far)
Retro's files are only a kernel, they won't work as a firmware. You would need to find the latest firmware for your card, flash it and see if that works.
That's the problem, I have looked and cannot find any for this cart after a dozen or so links.
The issue is, your card might not have any firmware. My research is pulling up a thread from 2012. If their site has been dead since then, there's no way there could be any firmware that will work on the latest DSi firmware.
Your best bet is buy a better card, like an R4i Gold, they cheap as crap nowadays and if you get one from http://www.r4ids.cn/, you get offical Wood R4 support and card that works on the latest 3DS/DSi Firmware. Seriously, it's a lot less of a hassle.
Well I still can go out and get a ds lite which should work fine? I forgot the fw updates on the dsi were to block out flashcarts.

I think a few of the early systems could benefit from that, at least up to the 8 bit generation, by the 16 bit generation I think TVs had gotten a lot better in almost every way
