Discussion Time! Yay!

As what the topic says, do you think it's possible for the N3DS can play N64 games? IMO, It could be possible, but it will struggle a lot. Wii is still Not64

Maybe. But even the Wii homebrew couldn't properly emulate the N64 (last I checked). It's probably going to take really long until that, if it ever happens.

it has the necessary processing power, so with access to all of the 3ds' capabilities and if someone put in the work from grounds up it shouldnt be impossible. but its highly improbable someone will do that. also there'd most likely be per game optimizations needed.

We can barely emulate 32 bit 2d GBA games. I think that 64 bit 3d N64 games will take a lot longer to be even playable.

Last time i checked, the Wii was significantly more powerful than the New 3DS. I'm just not sure if the New 3DS can handle it!

I want Mario 64 :(

retroarch ported mupen to the psp and it runed like at 10 fps some games and some to 5 fps so maybe someone could port that one to the new 3ds, it will run so smooth because new 3ds has 804 mhz and 4 cores and 256 mb of fcram while psp has like 333mhz and like 24mb of ram and the wii used a old 90s PowerPC processor so if someone could port that to new 3ds it will be sweet even sweeter than the wii and even the original xbox if you ask me but just my opinion

the o3ds barely emulates them. i'm pretty sure the n3ds has lots of stuff at full speed
and gba vc roms work perfectly and they are emulated on old 3ds so it depends on who makes the emulator not of specs

One of the biggest issues is there isn't really a decent N64 emulator to port in the first place!
This is the reason. N64 Emulation has remained shoddy after a lot of years. A lot of the emulators just aren't portable, and the one that most likely is Mupen. There realistically needs to be an emulator built from scratch, that would be a lot more up to date for all kinds of devices but it still hasn't happened after all of these years, and I don't see it happening now. Mupen is definitely the best bet though, but it doesn't seem like anyone has bothered.

Daedalus from the PSP, might also be one.. but I don't know how far along it ever got.

thats because vc gba games aren't as limited in their hardware access as userland gba emulators on o3ds, isnt it? they can use the full o3ds power.
our emulators cant. if we could, we'd see a grave increase in gba emulator performance of o3ds.
i mean, with kernel access, the 3ds should at least end up on par with the psp's emulation performance

Well you have a point on that but still not a problem for Nintendo or Microsoft with xbox 360 backwards compatibility with xbox one or old 3ds and gba emulation so I really don't know but if the question is does the new 3ds has the specs to run n64 emulation the answer is yes, but would anybody be able to do it I dont know

GBA VC (the ones running under the ambassador titles, not injecting into the GBC/NES ones) isn't emulation. The 3DS (both old and new) has most of the original GBA hardware inside it still. Think of it like Nintendont except for GBA (this isn't 100% accurate, but it's the simplest imagery I can give at the moment).

Ds used the arm 7 to play gba games, 3ds dosent have a arm 7 and dsi never played gba games so i think is emulated, same as wii and n64 vc games

The N3DS has enough horsepower to support a basic N64 emulator with compatibility for the most popular titles, it's far superior to the O3DS which could only support a PoC emulator at best. It's only a matter of time before we learn how to utilize the system's capabilities fully, first it has to be thoroughly investigated. Libraries already exist and there's homebrew coming out (obviously), but we're still at the early stages when it comes to mapping functionality.
