I purchased the Majora's Mask New 3DS back when it was available and haven't opened it all this time. It's sort of just sat in my closet seeing as I've been busy with work and just life in general.

Now, I've read this Majora's Mask New 3DS comes with firmware 9.0. which means I'm a candidate for CFW according to my limited knowledge of what I've read. Here's my dilemma, there is too much information that I need to educate myself on and what apparently looks like different CFW's? I'm no stranger to the Homebrew/CFW/flashcart scene as I was pretty much on top of it in the Wii/PSP/VIta and DS. However, this stuff with the New 3DS is just overwhelming - There seems to be different permutations of the same firmware hack and then there are flashcarts. Perhaps I'm getting old -_-

I've gone through the stickies and I can't find what I'm looking for - An up to date step by step guide with clear explanations for those new to the scene and wanting to hack 9.2 firmware and below and be able to play all 3DS and New 3DS games. Is this something that is available that I've missed or is someone kind enough to help with explanations? I essentially need an, "explain it to me like I'm 5" version. If someone is kind enough to do this for me, I'd recommend changing my thread title and creating a new sticky that should be updated periodically. With enough education I'm willing to take that role once I've become a subject matter expert.

Thank you all -

See the tutorial in my signature :-) Also, not all MM consoles come with 9.0. The ones from the original release yes, but not from all the subsequent waves (in Aus there were like 5 waves). If you preordered it when it first came up you should be in luck :-)

Thanks kind sir/madam - The MM New 3DS is one that I preordered and received in the first wave =D. I'll take a look at your guide and come back with questions. I appreciate the direction -

No problem I am happy to help. There are some new developments since that guide in regards to the homebrew loader and YouTube, those are some things to read about before you start (if you want to be really careful). I don't actually really know much about how to do it without cubic ninja but if you have problems, asking in your thread here or in that tutorial thread should get you some answers pretty fast.

Here is the tutorial if you have a N3DS on firmware 9.0 - 9.2 but don't have flashcart, OOT, CN...

https://gbatemp.net/threads/tutorial-how-to-install-a-cfw-on-a-9-0-9-2-n3ds-without-cn-oot.398394/

EDIT: Before proceeding to connect console to WiFi network make sure you block all N's servers on the router (there is a new one, which also need to be blocked, DNS doesn't seem to work anymore I read) to avoid updating the console. If not sure then wait until someone knowledgeable about it replies.

If he's on 9.0-9.2 then it wont autoupdate the browser. And 3DSs dont auto update anyway, it would just download the update and nag him

Well yeah, update nags on sysNAND can be removed easily by booting into recovery mode and cancelling the update, that's not an issue.
The thing I was hearing is that DNS method is no more effective and that browser would start saying to update system to use browser. I might just been misinformed.

Not misinformed, just not fully informed. The DNS method is indeed no longer effective (for now) because Nintendo added at least two new servers to provide updates. No idea if the other methods like freemultipatcher still prevent the auto download or not.

As for the browser, my understanding is that if you are on a 9.9 or higher (might also require a browser version of 26, not sure) your 3DS is capable of checking to see if the browser is out of date, and if so it will disable the browser and prompt you to download a system update from the server. In addition, all game carts with 9.9 on them (the latest wave of games, including Tri Force Heroes, Chibi-Robo! and the new Pokemon Mystery Dungeon (JPN only so far, but im sure someone has imported it and it does come out in the next few weeks in the US) include a "stub" browser that simply prompts the user to update their system from Nintendo's servers to use the browser.

If you are on 9.2 or lower (which OP is) you have NOTHING to worry about as your system firmware and browser are unable to perform the check that is locking the browser in the first place, and if you are using roms/cias you don't need to worry about the game trying to install an updates at all.

The tubehax dns still works to block updates, and it also works for the 9.9 browser as long as you didn't get the update message yet.
