I'm wondering if I were to buy a "used" XL system from GameStop (US Retailer, of course you'd know this if you're going to reply) if it would be compatible with the Gateway flashcard? I mean, will it be on an exploitable firmware? I know GameStop sells refurbished PS3 systems and they update them to the latest firmware version, so would the 3DS XL be updated too?

I'd ask if you could turn it on and make sure everything is working fine before buying it. Take a quick peek in the system settings and walla? Worth a shot right?

No guarantees, but if they take the time to update all the PS3s, I don't know why they wouldnt do the same to the 3DSs

Yeah, I never thought of that. I'm sure they wouldn't have a problem with me turning it on and stuff. Cool advice! Thanks!

yeah first thing they do when they get it is format and update unless its been sitting on that shelf for a really really long time then it has been updated.

You can definitely say you want to check it out first. If they press you for a good reason, just say "because if I'm going to spend this much money, I want to be sure it's what I want"

Also, check to make sure the touch screen is good. I almost bought a second 3DS last month that was firmware 7.x but ultimately backed out because the touch screen was bad and refused to re-calibrate.

EDIT: Oh, and btw, I just checked craigslist where I live. There are four 3DS listings for $60, and at least two of them, in the photos, are DEFINITELY pre-9.0 (no theme button). No chargers, but you can buy a charger for $2 on Ebay. I did, and my charger works great. So yeah, check craigslist for older models. You'd be surprised how many people don't update their systems.

A month or so ago I bought a brand new Gamestop NES Edition 3DS XL and it came with a v7.x firmware. All of the used original 3DS systems I have ever bought have been hit and miss but if you find an employee that likes you or is having a good day they usually have no issues with grabbing an old system out of the back and firing it up to let you check the firmware. I have heard from my local Gamestop staff that it is procedure to update the device to the latest version when they accept it from trade in and then wipe the device, so finding a used device with a good firmware might be hit or miss. It all depends on what firmware was the newest when the device was traded in. Devices that have been in inventory longer have a greater chance of having an exploitable firmware. I would recommend grabbing a new system known to have an exploitable firmware. If all else fails there is always eBay and CraigsList.

In this day and age of constant Wi-Fi connections in the home and public places, i can't see why the previous owner wouldn't tap yes to and update promt. You might get lucky to find a console thats been sitting in the shop since 9.2 was the latest update, but i highly doubt it. But good luck anyway though! :)

Another nice place to find a used 3ds XL with an outdated firmware is a pawnshop. They don't give a shit if you wanna buy the console to pirate games, but you don't get any warranty, so if it breaks, you're fucked.

the vram is one advantage when it comes to AI but ends up being slower even with that and really AI is the only use case that needs more than 12gb vram right now

    Interesting lol

I think I watched a video where two games at 4K where eating just over 16GB of RAM and it's the one case where the 7900XT and XTX pulled ahead (minus RTX of course)

So my opinion is that they could age a bit better in the future, and maybe AMD will continue improving them via drivers like they tend to do. No guarantee there but they have done it in the past. Just a feeling I have.

cyberpunk at 4k without DLSS/fidelityfx *might* exceed 12gb

but that game barely runs at native 4k
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
I think it was some newer games and probably poorly optimized PS4 or PS5 ports
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
they definitely will age better but i feel dlss might outweigh that since it looks about as good as native resolution and much less demanding

AMD could introduce something comparable to DLSS but nvidia's got a lot more experience with that

least amd 7xxx has tensor cores which the previous generations didn't so there is the potential for AI upscaling
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
They have FSR or whatever it's called and yeah it's still not great
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
so AMD seem to finally be starting to take AI seriously
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Oh yeah those new 8000 CPUs have AI cores built in that's interesting
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Maybe they plan on offloading to the CPU?
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
Would be kinda cool to have the CPU and GPU working in random more
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
    Tandem even
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
i think i heard of that, it's a good idea, shouldn't need a dedicated GPU just to run a LLM or video upscaling
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the nvidia shield tv has AI video upscaling
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
LLMs can be run on cpu anyway but it's quite slow

I had a girlfriend who had a twin sister and they would mess with me constantly.... Until one chipped a tooth then finally I could tell them apart.... Lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
They would have the same hair style the same clothes everything... Really messed with my head lol
  • Psionic Roshambo @ Psionic Roshambo:
@The Real Jdbye, I could see AMD trying to pull off the CPU GPU tandem thing, would be a way to maybe close the gap a bit with Nvidia. Plus it would kinda put Nvidia at a future disadvantage since Nvidia can't make X86/64 CPUs? Intel and AMD licensing issues... I wonder how much that has held back innovation.
