So I am a bit behind the times and am just now getting a psp. Bought a used 1001. Problem is it freezes during the main menu and when I try a game(currently just copied FF7 from my ps3). Now I am in no way a tech person so if anyone can help then full explanations rather than abbreviated posts would help a lot. I found this list of questions from another forum that was dead in the psp area so here is to hoping this one is fairly active.
1. What is your PSP's Model?
Model is 1001

2. What is your update version? (Be sure to state if it is CFW or OFW.)
As far as I can tell it is OFW and 6.60

3. How long have you had it?
A day

4. How long ago did it start freeze?
Soon after getting it

5. How it freezes: (choose one)
a. Does it freeze and then turn off in about 5-10 seconds?
b. Does it freeze and stay frozen unless you take the batt. out?
c. You don't know.
d. Other: please explain.
Answer would be A

6. When it freezes: (choose one)
a. Does it freeze when you first turn it on?
b. Does it freeze only while in a game(if so, which game)?
c. Does it seem to freeze randomly at any time, while in-game or anywhere?
d. You don't know.
e. Other: please explain.
Answer is C, longest without freezing is about 5 minutes.

OPTIONAL:This part is if it is a hardware issue, if you are not sure you can/want to take apart your PSP unit, then skip numbers 7 and 8.

7. Have you taken your PSP system apart before?
Never have messed with a psp until now.

8. If so, are you familiar with the inside of your PSP unit?
Negative.
MORE OPTIONAL:If for any reason I cannot help you (slim/phat chance
laugh2.gif
) or if you do not wish to follow my solution, I'd also like a little bit more info to refer you to a repair facility:

9. Did you buy/obtain your PSP new or used?
Used

10. Is your warranty still valid?
I would highly doubt it.

11. Is the serial number still on the bottom of your PSP(don't state it, just say if it's there)?
Serial number is indeed there.

12. Is there still a semi-long, skinny sticker at the lower part of your PSP's battery compartment under the larger sticker?
The "Warranty Void If Seal Damaged" sticker is there still.

If anyone has any ideas on how to fix it I'd appreciate the time.

Give this a try. Working with a used psp could be tricky, especially if it's already hacked. See if any of these work and if not let me know.

Sound like something is missing in flash0 try booting into recovery menu with r or l while flipping the power switch and tell me if anything happens.

I actually saw that video earlier and forgot to mention it. When holding the L or R trigger and turning it on it does nothing different than a normal startup.

Than it either has water damage or a flex cable is loose inside are you able to run a system update or reset the PSP? Settings>System Settings>Restore Default Settings

Tried a system update but when I try to find my wifi access it says security not supported?
By reset do you mean from going to the system settings and resetting those or holding the start, select, triangle and square?

After downgrading do I need to do anything else? Also will downgrading effect the playing of any games I put on the memory or get for it later?

No but from there you can use a 6.60 CFW and play PSP,PSX,Homebrew and the bajillion free emulators that run on the PSP for free.

I'll have to give that a go tomorrow(make that later today) as I do not currently remember the username/pass for my router(written down somewhere). Will let you know how it goes when I try it.

The battery itself could be faulty.
Would it show any signs in the screen before freezing? Just noticed it gives a tiny dull...jump, for a lack of a better word, before freezing. Also would it not just cut off instantly if it was the battery rather than freeze? I'm not a very techy person and the only handheld game consoles I'm used to are the old GBA.

Also would this one work as well? The 6.60 PRO or would it be better to downgrade first?

Upgrade then downgrade this will ensure your flash 0/1/2/3 are not missing any files from a botched upgrade/downgrade on the previous owner's part.

The battery itself could be faulty.
This is a possibility but there would be an audible pop if it was a battery issue and the PSP is built very well, even with all parts disconnected but the screen the unit will still function, hell you can plug things into the motherboard while it's on and have no problems.

I've never used the downgrader (for 6.61) the psp scene died out a while ago but sony released 6.61 out of nowhere and it got hacked in under 24 hours so i'm not quite sure ill give it a little read.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

[How do I use it?]
Copy the "PSP" folder to your PSP. The downgrader is "signed" and can be launched from OFW XMB. You need to copy the 6.20 update to PSP/GAME/UPDATE/EBOOT.PBP and for PSPgo it must be the eflash it is placed on. After setup run the downgrader and follow the onscreen instructions.

[What does it technically do?]
6.20-6.35: It uses the utility/power exploit to gain kernel access and reboots into the updater with a special PRX running. This PRX uses the pspdecrypt functionality to decrypt the updater PRX when needed. This allows the updater to boot in the newer firmwares.
6.38/6.39: It uses my http_storage exploit to gain kernel access. Basically, http_storage has a vulnerability in it, where I can write -1 to anywhere in memory.
6.60: Uses sceNetMPulldown to gain kernel access.
6.61: same as 6.60 (only certloader kexploit is patched in 6.61)

I cant link the 6.20 update here since Sony owns it but a quick google search should find it easy.

Lol yeah like I said I'm a bit behind the times. I'm honestly just trying a psp for the first time(honestly wanted it for the most part for FF7- Crisis Core), if you find out anything just let me know.

Okay so I got it down to 6.20 and got the CFW 6.20 PRO-B6 onto it but I am still getting freezing even in the main menu. Now I will say I have not yet tried the game with the CFW but without it the UMD game itself did not freeze as fast as even the menu itself did.

Do I need a different CFW or to change some setting? Or a different psp all together?

Press select while in xmb and try lowering the CPU Clock XMB/GAME speed to default if the PSP still turns off on you randomly its probably the battery as a test plug in the charger lower the brightness the lowest it can be and mute the speakers then pop out the battery while in use and see if it turns off on you while doing nothing.

Everything is on default, and the system does still freeze while using just the charger without the battery. I can leave it sitting for a fair bit of time, seems to only freeze when I am actually doing anything with it. Freezes even in the recovery menu.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Also since having taken off the CFW and reverting back to OFW 6.20 it's not freezing nearly as fast.

Though not by a whole lot. Can play the game for a moment while it would continue to freeze at the game screen where you continue or start a new game.

Wherever you bought it from return it, the unit has hardware damage to the motherboard either from an electrical short or someone opening it and breaking a flap for either power switch or the connector for the charging port.
