Just appeared under scheduled maintenance.

Wii U: Nintendo eShop
Wii U: General
Nintendo 3DS: Nintendo eShop
Nintendo 3DS: General
Wii: Wii Shop Channel
Nintendo DS: Nintendo DSi Shop

This maintenance will take place on:

– Europe: October 19th (10PM) to October 20th (2AM)
– UK: October 19th (9PM) to October 20th (1AM)
– North America (EDT): October 19th (4PM) to October 20th (8PM)
– North America (PDT): October 19th (1PM) to October 20th (5PM)
– Japan: October 20th (5AM to 9AM)

This is not just an update for online. Every system firmware is being updated. This is most certainly a company wide update to introduce the new DeNA account system and CN replacement which is being announced officially within the next two days along with the first mobile titles.

Just a heads up.

DeNA account system?

Yes. Have you been hiding under a rock?

From the initial partnership announcement earlier this year:

Nintendo and DeNA also plan to develop an online membership service that is accessible from smart devices, PC and Nintendo systems, such as the Nintendo 3DS portable system and the Wii U home console. The membership service, which is targeted to launch in the fall of 2015, will be built on DeNA's extensive experience and capabilities in online membership services.

Seems promising, however I'm curious how hard they're gonna fail it.

Nintendo aren't behind it, DeNA are - a company with an extensive history of consumer based online services. Therefore it will be good. Hopefully.

I hope it will be bad actually, how funny would that be xd
Also who knows what possibilities brings an insecure online membership service :D

For those of us with up-to-date systems, this is going to be huge and a welcome change. The new CN replacement system is what I'm most looking forward to.

However, for everyone who just got comfy with homebrew on all sides...this could be ugly and a severe divide between the masses.

Very interesting times.

It's not a DeNA account system but an update on NNID by DeNA.

Let's see how things goes. My Wii U will be updated on the spot, but i'll wait before knowing how it will affect to 3DS homebrew.

I've been toying with getting a wii to use for homebrew and reverting my WiiU to stock just to keep that system legit. I'd rather not have any issues with my WiiU connecting online or give Nintendo a reason to block my Nintendo ID. This reaffirms my need to do so. May be time to get a Wii and restore my vWii back to stock.

And gamespy before their demise had run matchmaking online game services for quite some time, Nintendo still made it suck though.

Few Wii and 3DS games actually sucked online. The most notable i can remember is Smash Bros Brawl.

Just don't get carried away here.

Ignoring the security/malicious user stuff, or more or less total lack thereof, I have no great issues with their netcode and yeah most of it performed OK under normal conditions. The friend code stuff that they foisted upon everybody, to the detriment of good online matchmaking, on the other hand speaks to a lack of a clue, or at very best a whole lot of fear, higher up in Nintendo's decision making so I am not inclined to be kind there.

I always found the FCs a minor annoyance, maybe because i'm not much of an online player aside from a few games on PC and console. It worked alright, and Nintendo itself came later with solutions for the per-game FCs (Well to be honest, Konami was the very first with Castlevania Judgment and its Rival system)

I think - and always though - that the reactions to that were pretty hyperbolic.

I want that my NNID be like my xbox live or psn accounts. Login on any console with my account or when I sell my console, I continue with my games, my account.
And I want to be able to share digital games with members of my family, but I doubt Nintendo will fulfil either of our wishes any time soon. Heck, they won't even unlink your account if your 3DS gets damaged. You *have to* send it in for repair if you want to keep your games.
