New to Sonic, what is a good Sonic game for me to try first?

I would start with the original. It's still a good game, with great music. If you have a 3DS, go for the M2 remake/port. Sonic 2 is just as good, or maybe better. In my opinion, the only decent offering of the past 10 years was sonic rush on the NDS.

I think Sonic 2 was fun when I was a kid, playing it at a friends house. The only "recent" game I've enjoyed is Sonic Advance for the GBA. (I haven't played that many though).
Or if you want something completely different and "so bad it's kinda good": Sonic Adventure 2 (PSN, Game Cube, Dreamcast, maybe more)

So is the original just called "Sonic"? What platform is it for? Sega Genesis? And what is the M2 Remake/Port?
lol sorry for bombarding you with questions

2D sonic games, sonic the hedgehog 2/sega genesis, sonic rush 1/nintendo ds, and sonic advance 1/ game boy advance.

3D sonic games ,sonic adventure 1/sega dreamcast, sonic heroes/xbox/gamecube (ps2 version has framerate issues), and sonic colors/nintendo wii.

I highly suggest the Sega Genesis games.
Sonic 1, CD, 2, 3, Sonic 3 and knuckles.
Sonic 3D Blast on the Sega Saturn (and PC ports) had a fun 3D special stage but its mostly a sort of isometric Flicky game.
Oh and try Flicky on Sega Genesis its a nice classic and is kind of a precursor to Sonic in way, or rather the birds are reused in sonic.
The Game Gear games are pretty decent too.

Knuckles Chaotix is a horrible mess of a game but actually fun with a friend co-op as you can get around in the game without really knowing where you are going just fine. Kinda a turn brain off and go crazy game so kinda decent.

From there Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were not bad but after that the games started to tank really bad.
Sonic Heroes was kind of its last return to grace before diving off the deep end.

The GBA games are not too bad either, including the spin offs and they are worth a try though the level design is a little off.
Really hate how Dimps designs levels but the first Sonic Advance was actually pretty decent all around.

Sonic Unleashed is not recommended but I hear the running stages are alright.
Sonic Colors is pretty much the same but with Yoshi Island style power ups placed in convenient places and well, its pretty much Sonic Unleashed without the werewolf night stages.
Sonic Generations was after those two and all share bad blocky and simple level designs if you ask me.
I personally disliked all three of those games, they simply don't feel like Sonic games to me and more like generic platformers that "gotta go fast".

Sonic and the Secret Rings has a few good moments but like Sonic R racing spin off you gotta give it a chance and suffer a little before its enjoyable.

Sonic 4 EP 1 and 2 are probably not bad but they are essentially Sonic Advance 4 with lots of Dimps level design and some music that personally makes my ears bleed.
I don't suggest them but some say they are enjoyable.

Sega Sonic Arcade was an interesting game too, very different and rare but worth looking up.

So ya, stick with the classics and spin offs from the 32-bit era and lower and you should be good.
Sonic Adventure, Sonic Advance and Sonic Heroes are kind of special exceptions.

Oh and while I'm at it, google search for a Sonic hack called " Sonic Classic Heroes ".
I can't link it here but the the hack lets ya play with three characters at once or two other players in co-op plus it combines Sonic 1 and 2.
I highly suggest turning on Choatix mode when playing with friends as it gets crazy fast.
Not the best game to start with but it's a fun way to introduce other players to the first two Sonic games.

Hope that helps ya, I kinda got carried away but should steer ya in the right direction.

Edit: forgot about Sonic Rush and Sonic Rush Adventure but eh, they aren't the greatest but worth playing at least once.
Edit2: Better than just my opinion check out http://info.sonicretro.org/Category:Games they have plenty of info on the games.
Oh also Sega Genesis was also called Sega Mega Drive. Kinda important to know.

It was called "Sonic the hedgehog" and originally released on the megadrive/Genesis. It was a bit of a big deal at the time. Anyhow, the sega 3D classics series has a great port/remake of the game, which I highly recommend as a starting place to see what all the fuss was about. But before that, you need to swat up on your gaming history ;)

Here's a review from nintendolife if you need any convincing....

Thanks! I played Sonic the Hedgehog last night, and I enjoyed it. Next I'll try Sonic 2 or the 3D Classics remake of Sonic. Then the romhack shadow1w2 told me about.

I agree. If we must start somewhere, it's better to start with that.

I "bought" Sonic Generations, and I didn't like it. Now I am thinking of trying an older game, but I know nothing about Sonic. Any suggestions?
Don't think that you're gonna like any Sonic then lol.
The one i played and enjoyed are Generations, Colors on Wii and DS (Especially DS) and Sonic Rush. Try Colors on DS i guess.

3/3 and knuckles was better but I would start with 2 and then play 3/knuckles and finally 1. I will also throw the master system games in there, if only on the fascinating artifact front. Megadrive Sonic 3d I do actually enjoy but at the same time you would probably not lose anything by skipping it.

Generations and colours some would be able to derive some enjoyment. I guess they do well enough, if you are playing it for Sonic though then... not so much.

I am going to say skip Sonic Adventure if you are after Sonic games. I once heard it put forth that Star Wars episode 1 was in fact just a middle of the road sci fi film but by virtue of being tagged Star Wars it became the worst t'ing evar. I can not say I agree completely with that but the same idea very much applies to this for me. If you are particularly after middle of the road adventure games on the dreamcast and/or gamecube then OK I guess.

Basically Sonic was like Streets of Rage and had about 3 good games on the megadrive, maybe a handful of things elsewhere at the time and then died.

Unlike Streets of Rage though the missteps got published.

Sonic the Hedgehog, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Sonic Colors DS, Freedom Planet.

There are also some other decent handheld Sonic games, but the level design is generally lacking in them.

My personal favourite is sonic 3 and knuckles, but id suggest getting sonic3c mod as it fixes some issues i had with the original e.g. Restore "big arms".

As far as classic Sonic is concerned, I was always partial towards Sonic 3 with the Knuckles expansion, AKA Sonic 3 & Knuckles. The Advance series is often overlooked, which is a shame, because they're excellent. If you want something newer than that, there's Rush, Rush Adventure and Colours. If you want a 3D Sonic game, try out Sonic Adventure 2 Battle and Colours.
