I am trying to find an alternative to sky3ds with the best homebrew options. I also want to be able to install eshop games and dlc. I have heard of CFW, but don't know a lot about it (Can you install games without using a flashcart?). Basically, what is the best firmware to have and what do you think the best route to go would be?

Yes, CFW lets you install games without the need of a flash cart. You need firmware 9.2 or lower.

Here was my strategy, it worked for me for 2 units. I had luck asking people on ebay what the first few digits of their serial number was of their unopened n3ds. There's a thread around here that can help you find a n3ds with 9.2 or lower fw just by looking at the serial number. Just ask enough people, and you'll definitely find someone eventually that has what you want.

Thanks for the reply. I just went to ebay and typed in "3ds firmware" and all kinds of options opened up. I'm not necessarily looking for a new system. I already have a New 3DS so I'll probably just go with a 3DS XL and continue using my New 3DS with Sky.

But if you really want, you can search for N3Ds systems on 9.2 or lower (unless you don't care about the extra speed and some N3DS exclusive games)
Mainly for the speed with emulators that run far superior on N3DS then O3DS

People who put 9.0 in the title for the n3ds know what they have is hard to come by and they will charge you a premium for it. ebay has a bunch of 9.0 n3ds for $280+ buy it now prices, with no auction pricing. Asking people selling unopened n3ds what their serial numbers are, and you can save $100 easy. It's not worth it, imo, I'd rather just spend a little time sending out messages than spending that extra $100. But if someone doesn't mind paying, then by all means. At least this way there's no ambiguity about what you're getting.

I actually just got super lucky. I was gonna buy one off of a guy on craigslist, but when I met up with him he seemed sketchy so I ditched him and went to Gamestop to buy a new one. There was a kid in front of me selling his new 3ds for 80$ cash. I gave him $120 for it and it has all of the original packaging. The only thing opened was the 3DS. He also had never updated it. I was so freaking excited. I never find deals haha
