Hello,

So, I JUST bought a new 3DS. I noticed when I turned it on that it came installed with version 9.0.0.20E. Basically, all I'm wanting to do is play roms.
I've done some research and basically, all I know is that there are 2 flash carts called Gateway and Sky3DS. Gateway can work on my 3ds, but it needs to have cubic ninja or Ocarina of Time and a save dongle to do some hack to let me use it. Sky3DS just works, however it doesnt have region free (which doesn't bother me TOO much, but would still like to not have that be an issue at all) and I have to keep pressing a button to move through backups, whereas the gateway has a menu for that (much nicer and I do prefer that over the button)

Then theres CFW which I have no experience with and basically, from reading online, the possibility of bricking my console when installing/getting the cfw usable or using a bad .cia is something I'm concerned about.

I've read on smea's twitter that yellow8 has got some new entry points. Got no idea what that means or how that benefits me, but I think for some reason it does, so if someone can explain that to me, would be greatly appreciated

TL;DR I have a new 3ds with version 9.0.0.20E and I'm wanting to play backups, so what's the best way to do this?

Thanks!

For a new 3DS, to use gateway you will need cubic ninja (or OoT and a save dongle) as well. To save money, just get cubic ninja then install ReiNand, it is a custom firmware. You can install all the roms you want to the home menu (in .cia form) and play them from there. Plus you can use homebrew and install GBA and DSiWare games to your home menu to play as well.

You want to play games on your 3DS as well as homebrew? Go for Gateway. Afraid that you might accidentally update your console and brick it? Just use Sky3DS and Ninjhax 2.1. Sky3DS support all firmwares as if now and will probably be your best bet if you don't want to use emuNAND's or CIA's or if you just want to be on the latest firmware

So I've looked on the internet and found a copy of Cubic Ninjas for $50 (+$7.50 postage). Considering that I can't find the game in any retail store, I'd say thats a good price?
Actually, that brings up another question, would I be able to find a preowned copy of Cubic Ninja is JBHIFI or EB Games?

And I downloaded ReiNand 2.1 (thats the right one right?), is there anywhere that explains how to install it? On his github, it doesnt have any of those details.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

Also, I have a local computer swap meet where I've seen some people selling R4 cards and stuff, I havent been there for a long time, so I'm not sure if they sell Sky3DS or Gateways.
I've seen online how to spot fake Gateways, but are there any fake Sky3DSs out there and if there are, is there a way to spot them?

OoT + Gateway if you have means to restore the save game, this combination offers a lot of flexibility
Cubic ninja is out of print and quite useless as a game

I also have bought Pokemon Y. I havent played it yet in fear of it updating my console. Would that likely happen? And would I be best to just not play it right now or is there even a way for it to not update my console?

You won't find Cubic Ninja for sale in any retail shop - they all got snapped up when Smealum announced Ninjhax at the beginning of the year. $50 for a CN in Aus is all right. You wouldn't find it for less than $45. As for ReiNand - I know I found everything I needed on this forum but I don't remember exactly where. You need the ReiNand that can use mset. (This means you can boot into it from the DS profile rather than need to carry cubic ninja around with you). There should be a tutorial around somewhere. Basically you follow the tutorial for gateway, make an emuNAND and downgrade the system settings (there is a pdf file available on the gateway website that's called manual for new 3ds or something like that, that you can follow), then you put the ReiNand files on your sd card and install the ReiNand nds file with a DS flashcart. Now when you go to settings, profile, DS profile it will boot into ReiNand.

Thanks for the help everyone!

I know how to spot the difference with a Gateway, but not Sky3DS.

Thanks.

I also have a sorta unrelated question in regards to this particular topic, but I also have an R4i SDHC RTS Lite that I bought a few years ago (not sure of the exact model/year) and I'm wanting to know if the current firmware on there website will work on this card? I've noticed they release a new version of the card each year, is that just a rebrand or is it a completely new card that only works with the latest firmware?
The website on the card is www.r4isdhc.com

As long as it has ever worked on a 3DS, you can get a DS flashcart to work. Once you have ReiNand installed, you'll need to get a CIA installer on your console (the tutorial in usernametaken's sig should help you there), then just install "bluecardfix.cia" found in the gateway download. This will remove all the blocks that have ever been applied by 3DS firmwares.
Also, I don't know how to spot a fake Sky3DS but if you do a search for the website you are thinking of getting one from in this forum, you should get your answer as to whether they are reliable (there will be a tirade against them if someone had a bad experience).
I got my Gateway from OzModChips and had no problem with it.
If you are in Melbourne, I got a tip from someone recently that you can go to the Box Hill computer markets and there is a guy there you can haggle with and get a Sky for $50 (as opposed to $100 on OzModChips). Not sure if there's anything wrong with them but he has been using his for a long time with no issues.

Thanks!

Well, if I end up getting one from a website, then it'll most likely be http://www.ozmodchips.com/
Otherwise it'll be from a computer swap meet which I guess will be hard to check.

And I'm in Geelong, so the Geelong computer swap meet will be the one I'll be going to.

--------------------- MERGED ---------------------------

And another question regarding the Sky3DS. If I do find one at the computer swap meet, I've noticed online some of the cards have different images on the cards itself and its packaging. If the picture isn't whats shown on the versions that are sold on ozmodchips, but it has the blue button, is that version still ok or is it only the one with the latest packaging which is the best?

e.g. http://www.ozmodchips.com/images/Sky-3DS-Australia.jpg (latest I'm guessing)
http://www.r4-ds-au.com/product_images/f/239/sky3ds_2__62768_zoom.jpg (an older one?)

There really isn't a way to tell (Visually) if a Sky3ds is a real Blue button or a fake that has had it's plastic cap (button) swapped from Red to Blue.
Your best bet is usually to buy from a reputable reseller. That way your chances of getting screwed in the first place are minimized & if you still get a red cart, you'll be able to return it for a blue / refund. *Sometimes even reputable resellers get bad stock*

If you do get a red cart, it'll have a 10 game limit / start skipping games automatically beyond 9. It'll also have the skip issue sooner after you swap out games. (It'll think the old games are still there)
