What would it essentially take to do this? I know the n3ds is pretty weak but in terms of graphics wouldn't lowering the poly count of models and reducing their texture quality do the trick? lighting would have to be eliminated or changed as well but the code is essentially there and the only thing that would need to be changed are the controls. Then again i know nothing about hacking so i'm unsure if the code is ex-tractable. I also know nothing about game programming so i'm unaware of any other issues.

I would love to see wind waker on the n3ds and i'm just curious how feasible this would be.

It's possible, look at Xenoblade 3D, it's a port of a Wii game, and one with a very high render distance at that. The Wii is more powerful than the GC so any GC game should be portable. You won't see Wind Waker for n3DS though since it already got a Wii U remake.

Could a GameCube game be ported? Sure.

We have Wii titles like Xenoblade already on the system, and Resident Evil Revelations.
Wind Waker isn't exactly the highest fidelity title that appeared on the little box.

But will they?

Doubtful.

Well i'm just curious why has no game programmer ported his favorite game to the n3ds(doesn't have to be wind waker). Is there that big of a hurdle in porting a game besides downgrading the graphics?

Wait, you're asking if a HOMEBREWER could do it?

I thought you were asking about the feasibility of a studio like Nintendo being able to do it, with direct access to the uncompiled code and production assets.

In that case, my answer is an unequivocal no.

yeah sorry i was asking if a regular game programmer/homebrewer could do it. What is the issue? Viewing the source code?

Instead of taking half an hour to explain this, Inukami,

Google the term Binary Compatibility.

This will explain to you why you can't simply run a program made for another platform on a given platform.

It should provide you with the answers you seek.

do people not read on these boards? speaking of logic, you should take your own advice. How does what i said reflect emulating? i specifically said porting.
That word again. He's talking about PORTS.
Which would be possible under the conditions stated here

Porting takes quite some time, not only you would need to adjust the resolution of a game in order to fit the necessities of the 3DS, you would also have to rewrite the controls, graphics, just take a look at the Iwata Interviews with the developers of OOT3D and MM3D, they have taken a lot of creative liberties since porting a game is basically make a new game with the base of an old one, these kind of projects would take years, and you would need a developer team able to work with you, it might be possible if you had all of the tools in both the hardware of the 3DS and out, but as i said, porting is the kind of projects that you just need a full dedicated team in order to run that, you might aswell fund a team, acquire a Nintendo license, and start developing said game.

so bottom line is you can't extract the assets?
Assets = models, textures, sounds, etc. Sure, those can be extracted. But those are not a game, those are merely assets. The game engine and logic is not going to be ported by someone looking at the binary. So to answer your question, impossibly hard. Anyone without access to the source code is not going to be able to make the port.

We all (hopefully) know that here.
The point being that a port could be possible on hand of experts, while emulation is plain impossible.

I think the answer OP needs is something like:
It could be done, but don't expect anyone here or in any of these forums to do it or even try it.

You can port anything you want to 3DS, but you have to have a big and professional team to work on it, and of course, a ton of money.

Think positive, guys. We might get another awe-inspiring quote out of this that will change the outlook of humanity. :D
Sorry. We should search in the unknown to discover new things, new philosophies to open our eyes to the world, because, you know, "...who tells us that the solution is not inside the unknown?"
