For my Eur N3DS 9.0 I'd like to ditch the gateway and go the cia route.

I'm having no luck finding updated information on which is the best route to take.

What are the pros and cons of each cfw?
Which natively allow region free?
Which is most stable?

I wanted to do the same, this is what i gathered:

First of all you would need to use Ninjhax 1.x to launch Pasta CFW. Using Pasta you would install FBI or any other CIA installer to your microsd card ... this would have to be done on sysnand. You would need to use a linked sysnand / emunand to get any CIA file installed ... and you would have to install those being in sysnand mode. I didn't not do it myself yet, because basically i dislike the idea of writing anything to my sysnand, but should you try it and suceed in doing so, i would be glad to read about your experience with this process. Good luck ;)

I would recommend using rainand or cakesfw, btw. At least i was able to boot those on my 9.0.0-20E new3DS, successfully.

AFAIK rxtools actually has pasta built into it, so there's not really any reason to still use pasta.

Reinand- Very basic cfw that simply patches sig checks and some other minor things

Rxtools- basically reinand with a lot more features

Cakes- Allows for different plugins to be installed, generally recommended for more advanced users

Ninjhax allows for region free, and since cfw requires cubic ninja you'll get region free with whatever cfw you pick

It's a myth that 'sysnand mode' means every cia you install goes to sysnand. You can specify the destination with FBI and most titles (like games and apps) are built to install to SDMC whether you're in sysnand or emunand mode.

It's also a myth that rxtools is 'easy to use - good for beginners'. It has, by far, bricked more 3ds's than the other CFWs, and it's packed with complicated features that will confuse novices (which puts them at risk).

cakes and reinand are good choices.

Exactly...RxTools is far more complicated to setup than Pasta was originally...

Does the current RxTools have a better loading success rate than the old Pasta versions did? I'm still using an old version of Pasta, and had it fail on me two or three times in a row. Useful when it does work, but chains of failures like that can be irritating.

ok, 'sysnand mode' - it does not mean every cia gets installed to the nand flash (unless it's a system app or you specify that like you say, in FBI) - sure it will get installed to the sd card, but the TICKET will get installed to the sysnand flash, which is important.
if you install whilst in sysnand, the ticket will be in sysnand. if you install whilst in emunand, the ticket will be in emunand.
the game will only run if there is a ticket.
(you might know this, but just to explain in case other people get confused)

On the O3DS RxTools loading success rate is perfect or near perfect. I don't like the boot up wait time (nearly a minute) and then having to "press any key" to finish loading. Not sure about RxTools on the N3DS though (is that supported?). After loading though, absolutely nothing to complain about.

ReiNand on the N3DS is nice. Bootup time is much faster. You're only asked to press Start right at initial launch and that's it. I would use ReiNand on the O3DS if it was still supported.

Have not tried Cake, but plan to. If it's faster than RxTools, I think I would switch. Even Though it doesn't have region free.

Not sure which version of rxTools you have on your O3DS but last time I tried, it booted fast. It certainly didn't take a whole minute just to boot.

The latest version, but even 2.6 is slow versus reinand. Waiting 40-50 seconds for bootup is okay, however I hate that you have to "press any key" to continue before emunand will start loading (another 5-10 seconds and another un-needed screen - "press [R] to load menu"). I've asked in a few threads about the "Quick Boot" option in RxTools, but haven't gotten any info on it. I'm hoping "Quick Boot" behaviour is different, but I can't seem to enable it.

If it just booted straight to emunand like reinand the slow boot time wouldn't be such an issue (for me).

Thanks for the replies so far gentlemen!

I do have a new 3ds and gateway with fbi already installed.

Is rxtools or the current beta n3ds compatible? Is it gateway mset downgrade compatible?

I like the idea of reinand And cakes as well. Are there guides to install them? I seem to find only outdated info - doh!!

Is it as easy as drop and play since I'm already a gateway user with fbi installed?

All i can tell is that i've really found no way to install FBI on emunand, exclusively yet ... and i'm not that fond of doing changes to my sysnand. If someone finds a solution for this, i'd be more than happy to hear about it :)

Love to know where you get this crap information from, boot 3ds, goto settings>others settings>profile> nintendo ds profile then rxtools loads, don't press R just let it autoboot to emunand.

Takes me all of 30 seconds to be in emunand from turning my 3ds on

Rx2.6 always booted pretty quick for me on my o3ds, and now I've updated to the latest nightly it's even quicker (with quick boot on)... the only times it took more than about 20 seconds was before I updated my AGB_firm and it was always having to do it's 'copying files' portion of it's initial start-up.

As for RxT being the least n00b friendly - it was the first cfw I used, and it's the one I'm happiest with, and I never experienced anything more troublesome than somehow missing the above mentioned step of installing AGB_firm... but if I could put a cfw on my n3ds I'd probably go with Reinand.

Just like the tv show... Everybody loves Reinand!

i don't know about your set up, but why can't you just boot up ninjhax/some other hax, load fbi through the homebrew loader, and install the fbi cia?
