I still use my DSi more than my 3ds due to my backlog of 70+ games. I'm still buying them as they drop below $5.00 USD., Many are becoming as hard to find as older GBA games...However, because of the great games that have been coming out for the 3DS and now the XL's release...well I have been using my 3ds XL more and more these days.

back on topic... I have to try this; I LOVED the Space Invaders Extreme 2, this won't compare really but home brew? YES! ...curious about the name though...

It's a good starting point, easier to get homebrew running on a DS then 3DS (No special booting/cfw/other hacks/games needed to get it running)
You do have to buy extra hardware tho.
Not so with 9.2 o3ds.

I agree that the hax setup and current dev environment are kinda daunting though. There's no Palib or Gamemaker equivalent yet. (don't know if the current lua options are up to snuff yet either)

Nice, but when life icons are full, hard to see score/hi-score

Some developers actually care about the DS? Wow

Yep!

- No fighting firmware updates.
- It's a handheld.
- It's got real buttons.
- No Java.

I have to confess that if there was a faster open-source handheld with similar build quality I'd switch, though.

...curious about the name though...

I always thought Heiankyo Alien was pronounced "Hanky Alien". It isn't, but I decided that there should be a game called Hanky Alien.

Nice, but when life icons are full, hard to see score/hi-score

I'm brewing up a bugfix release that limits the number of extra lives, amongst other little fixes.

An update!

Download HankyAlien

Changes:
  • Number of extra lives is limited to 5;
  • UFO sound loops on DS as the UFO moves across the screen;
  • Restored the "Simian Zombie" intro screen that was accidentally disabled in the first release;
  • Difficulty gradually increases as player completes each wave of aliens;
  • Fixed flickering score titles;
  • Improved the ship explosion animation.
