Hacking [Q] New 3DS(XL) or Old 3DS(XL) What Is Best For Gateway?

Hey all,

I want your opinion about what the title said, what is best (and most friendly) when dealing with Gateway? Old or New 3DS?
My guess is that Old 3DS(XL) will be the one.

But I have few questions
1- Is it safe to buy ANY Old 3DS(XL) and guaranteeing that it will come with <=9.2 FW?
2- Let's assume that I'm at 9.2 and copied a ROM dump of Code Name S.T.E.A.M. to Gateway microSD (or any game require higher FW) and want to play it, can I play it? or I need to update SysNAND/EmuNAND first?
3- Last question (pretty dev related), Is there any way to "extract" 3DS game binaries? That can be loaded in IDA or other disassembler? If so then is there any extra needs in order to be loaded like plugins or something.

I saw that GW teased cheat support so I guess there's a way to manipulate games and do code injection

I'm pretty sure that any sealed o3DSXL will come withy FW <=9.2. Opened ones are fair game for any FW ofc. Can't help you with the other two questions though.

First general question - n3ds can only run emuNAND up to 9.5 which makes it slightly trickier to update than an o3ds. On the other hand, n3ds has a convenient profile exploit.

Keep in mind you can run CFW almost for free on both o3DS and n3DS - on o3DS you don't need anything (cubic ninja/gateway makes it a lot easier but not essential, and a DS flashcart is nice but not essential as you can use the browser exploit), on n3DS (for reinand) you need cubic ninja or a set-up OoT once (same as Gateway), so you can sell it afterwards, and I think you need to have a DS flashcart which costs like $10 (I don't remember a browser exploit being mentioned for rei)

It really depends on your own needs. If you have a phone with a hotspot with you at all times, and don't own a DS flashcart then there's no harm in an old 3DS. New 3DS has the advantage of profile exploit if you don't have access to a hotspot. But has the disadvantage of higher emuNANDs not being cracked yet. All things being equal I would choose a new 3DS just because of the better 3D and being able to play Xenoblade.

Don't know but, isn't N3DS XL EUR/US Monster Hunter 4 edition always come with 9.2?

oh btw there's a way to update your EmuNAND offline using BigBlueMenu and a downloaded FW.

I think you have to use sysupdater, but yeah. When buying a new one just check the serial number (or buy from a shop with a change of mind returns policy), or when buying second hand ask the seller to check the firmware for you.

Unless the extra ram gets utilized or a heap of exclusive n3ds games get release. I would go with the o3ds.

I have both consoles, both running cfw and hardly use the n3ds,

The n3ds looks and feels cheaper.
The shoulder button layout isn't as good as circle pad pro.
The c-stick is a joke compared to the circle pad pro joystick.
The back cover need to come of every time you want access to the sd card which is going to be damaged by many.
No latest firmware emunand.

The only advantage today that i see is the super stable 3d, which really isn't a great deal better at all.

Sure many will disagree but i was very disappointed with the n3ds from what i expected.

All new 03ds will be below 9.2, i picked one up brand new from ebay for $160 aud which is 117 usd.

tbh I don't care about enhanced 3D effect, extra buttons, NFC, etc... In fact I'm buying a 3DS mainly for hacking and hopefully debugging tools (stable ones) can be available later along with other cheat related tools.
What I'm looking for is CPU and RAM, two major points for me, but I think it's impossible to get N3DS(XL) with <=9.2 nowdays >.>

gotta buy the old one, my guess that it'll be exploited more in the future, even if ironhax(ninjahax2.0) or GW got updated to support newest FW (and ofc kernel exploit) I'll hold up until most tools got supported/updated.

uhh been reading for days lol, still new to 3DS as a whole and I'm not that pro but I can see 3ds scene future is bright.. kinda hehe.

Keep in mind the N3DS is more powerful than the O3DS, it's not just things like super stable 3d or the extra pad the hardware itself is better......also to the person who said you have to remove the back cover to transfer files....you can do it over wireless even on emunand without entering the system settings, you just need to install the proper cia file.


As for not finding an N3DS that can run gateway....it really depends on your location more than anything else, I'm still getting reports of people finding them, you just need to cross-reference with the list of serials that will run gateway

Micro SD Management App, I got it from a 3ds website with iso's...it's basically the wireless transfer but no having to go into system settings (and thus having to reboot emunand), apparently it works with CFW's as well

If you realy want sure to buy a exploitable 3DS buy a old 3ds or XL, if you buy a New 3DS maybe it has a 9.3 or higher.

ok people thanks for all of your opinions and advices, I guess I made up my mind

Old 3DS(XL):
1- Sealed packages insured to be on <=9.2
2- Gateway support without a retail game (I heard only CN work at the moment for new 3ds, interestingly enough, I can't even find a copy, and won't bother to buy sky3ds just for that)
3- ability to downgrade to 4.x and use the good old DS profile exploit, emunand up to 9.9 (perfect combo!)
4- Most homebrew tools,CFW,exploits work well with old 3ds
5- old 3ds will be the one to be exploited first and that's for sure
6- HARDWARE WiFi switch, Important for me!

New 3DS(XL):
1- Sealed/Used Packages NOT insured to be on 9.2 or lower
2- Gateway support need a retail game, and only one of them will work 100% (OoT users face something like corrupted save files and need extra old 3ds)
3- No FW downgrade (mset downgrade available) and no emunand support for recent FW
4- Homebrew tools,CFW, KERNEL exploits have little to no support at all beyond 9.2 (9.3 and up) even some not supported at 9.2 or lower
5- No hardware WiFi switch..
6- The extra shoulder buttons and the "c-stick" is unbelievably annoying, I tried them once and I can barely touch the extra L/R (thanks goodness no game use that!) and the c-stick is just wrong anyways (just my opinion, I didn't try that circle pad for old 3ds but from images I can assume it'll be better than c-stick)

The Verdict
So gonna with old 3ds.

But what kills me is the extra button and the upgraded hardware in new 3ds, It can be used in many great things later in 3ds scene :/

There aren't that many games out yet that are "N3DS ONLY" so you are free to choose between the two. n3ds is having progress on running homebrew, hacking?? Unsure what you mean by that. Game hacks? System hacks? Either way I believe that hasn't been dealt with, only just the homebrew part.
