I run my N3DS with 9.0 firmware and never had any problems. Just stay there, it's really not worth the risk of playing with sysupdater and 3DNUS possibly bricking your sysNAND or shelling out the cash for a 3DS game with 9.2 update onboard (which has proven to only partially update your N3DS compared with a full online update from Nintendo servers)

It's only a small patch to home menu so it's basically a feel good move. Won't change mset.
If you're running ninjhax 2, you might need to update the cn save but that's about it.

It's actually one of the few times that it's safe to update from a ROM. I and many others have upgraded our SysNAND from 9.0.0 to 9.2.0 using the Cooking Mama ROM.
