I recently discovered this word problem in a TV episode I watched recently:

"If a dinosaur runs 2.2 kilometers through the woods in ten minutes, but stops for lunch for three, how fast could he walk?"

I dare anyone here to post the correct answer! The grand prize is 7.3 liters of nothing! If someone can even tell me what TV series this is from, I will DOUBLE the grand prize! If someone can tell me which episode of that TV series has this word problem in it, I will give you ONE HUNDRED times the grand prize!!!!

Monty Python?
Nope, this TV series ran from 2007 to 2008.

It has pretty much been forgotten. I had to come up with a pretty clever hack to download the episodes off YouTube when they were only available in Japan. I had to create a youtube account through a japanese proxy and then download the episodes through that.

If you give up, the answers are here:

The correct answer to the problem is: Incomplete Data; The speed at which the dinosaur can walk is neither provided nor derivable from the information given.

It is from Dinosaur King episode 38: Mythical Mix Up
Well no fucking duh we can't find out the speed of him walking, i thought it was some kind of brain teaser, not a sorta obvious answer.
Lol

T= (X + 5m)
I don't know how to write math language.. what i mean is: "time equal more than 5 minutes"

i solved it :D

you mean T> 5 lol
you need a X that means number, or not? the reason i failed at maths was because i can't understand the crappy design of maths, for example invisible multiply symbols (like when you put 2 numbers togueter, you have to multiply them), X can be either a number or letter

i am the only one that thinks, the person who invented math stuff, made a crappy design?

i dont like thinking unless i have to

Nice! I'm glad someone here (besides me) knows REAL math language!
Would you mind telling me what the << sign means? Neither I nor Google has heard of that... If I knew that, I think I could solve the problem then.

Also, what form do want x in? An exact number if possible, or a series?

It's actually unsolvable problem :P I stole it from the internets.

Think of it this way: English has a crappy design, but would everybody really switch to Esperanto just because its design is "perfect"? (The real-life answer is an astounding NO!)

Well, it looks pretty convincing!

Here's one that is probably solvable:

d6aaabb6460641586702b318647fc602.png

The range of s is: 0 < Re(s) < 1 & -∞ < Im(s) < ∞
The goal is to prove that the real and imaginary parts of ζ(s) never both equal zero unless Re(s) equals 0.5.

If anyone here can solve THIS, they will be on tomorrow's front-page news worldwide!

Alright, I feel like if you want some actually intelligent conversations about math, the EOF is not the place
Nikola Tesla came from Serbia. Serbia's scientific knowledge back then in the 1800s, was not much different than many EoF frequenter's knowledge is now. BUT, there may be some hidden geniuses here in the EoF like Tesla was in Serbia...

That's not true.

Let's tackle the linguistic side first:

"[If] [a dinosaur] [runs [2.2 kilometers] [through the woods] [in ten minutes]], [but] [[stops for lunch] [for three]], [[how fast] [could he walk]]?"

Noun Phrase: a dinosaur
Verb Phrase/s: (NP = a dinosaur) runs 2.2 kilometers through the woods in ten minutes; (NP = a dinosaur) stops for lunch for three (minutes)

Question posed: How fast could he (NP = dinosaur) walk?

Now the maths:

Distance Traveled (D) = 2.2 kilometers
Time Taken (T) = 10 minutes, followed by 3 minute lunch break
Speed (S) = X

S = D/T

Case : The break is irrelevant as we are calculating top speed of the dinosaur (how fast he could walk) in this instance, not how fast he will reach a pre-set destination or what was its average speed. The amount of breaks he takes on the way does not factor into this - only the distance and time in the period of his movement. As such:

2.2km/10min = 2.2km/0,1666(...)h = 13.2km/h

Answer : The speed of the dinosaur, assuming it was consistent during motion, is 13.2km/h, hence that's how fast he can walk. It is possible that the dinosaur has a faster top speed, however we have no evidence of that based on the information given. The facts do show however that the dinosaur is capable of walking at at least that speed, which fulfils the question of "how fast it can walk".

Or am I missing a clever trick or word play here? Is the trick the fact that it's running and not walking and hence you can't calculate speed? If so, it's a pretty shitty trick, since you can easily say that anything higher than 0 and lower than 13.2km/h is his "walking" speed - you can walk faster or slower.

OBJECTION!

From the data we are given, we can calculate that the dinosaur can run at 13.2km/h, however as we all know thanks to that one episode of Malcolm In The Middle, walking is by definition a movement "at a regular pace by lifting and setting down each foot in turn, never having both feet off the ground at once", whereas running is "a type of gait characterized by an aerial phase in which all feet are above the ground".

So while was can say the dinosaur can run (calculated from the data we have) or move or ambulate (as this covers all type of motion) at 13.2km/h, we can't know how fast it can cover distances using the form of movement defined as "walking".

Therefore, we still don't have enough data to answer the question.
