So I was screwing around with the TWL_FIRM version to see if I could make my R4itt Pink card to work with a O3DS (sysNAND 4.2.0-9U, emuNAND 9.0.0-20U)

I have rxTools installed, loading it from MSET and booting to sysNAND to install both the DS FLashcard Time Warp CIA and the TWL_FIRM CIA.

The title ID and versions I downloaded are:

0004013800000102 v1489 (TWL_FIRM)
0004800F484E4841 v0 (FlashCardTimeWarp)

I already had the FlashCardTimeWarp.cia installed and the Blue Gateway Card worked just fine, but since that is the one I use in my N3DS, I wanted to see if I could make the pink R4itt I had lying around work since that one didn't boot with only the Time Warp cia.

So I went ahead and deleted 0004013800000102 (didn't check the version I had of that one, damn my soul) from NAND using FBI, and installed 0004013800000102 v1489 into NAND in its place.
Rebooted the 3DS and... now the DS games give me an error at boot.
"An error has occurred. Hold down the POWER button..."

I already tried deleting 0004013800000102 each time and tried with EACH of the versions that I saw compatibe with the USA firmware, which are:

v1489, v2565, v4625, v5681, v6704, v7762, v8817.

ALL OF THEM GIVE ME THE SAME ERROR! Dx

What can I do to fix this problem?!
I am sure I only deleted 0004013800000102 and no other CIA.

Format system nand - seriously, it will restore TWL FIRM. Either that or restore a backup.
I crossed out the bad idea. Reformatting can be very dangerous if you've been screwing with system titles. Not to mention all of your installed sd titles will be invalidated.

Restore an old nand with GW system restore.

I was basing it off old times - people intentionally bricked DS mode and a format fixed it up. A completely title deletion might make that different, but I figure a format would restore the proper TWL firmware anyway.

Things have changed a lot since the fierce waffle days. : )

The problem with reformatting is the 3ds does not keep backups of your titles, that would be completely impractical anyway -- it would take up too much space.

The 3ds expects things to be a certain way when reformatting; and when they're not, it hangs. Not a good thing to happen during a reformat. You'll be lucky if you have a usable system after such an event.

Restore, on the other hand, is like a save state where everything is brought back exactly how it was. That's a lot less risky than taking a gamble reformatting a modded system which Nintendo engineers don't expect you to have done, and haven't written fail-safes for.

If there are no backups of titles - then if DS mode was bricked, why does it restore properly? I'm under the impression TWL firm is all encompassing for DS mode stuff and therefore by bricking it, a format wouldn't save it, unless the brick isn't tied to whatever part of the firmware is being restored? If that makes ANY sense :P

When ds mode is bricked by profile corruption (i.e. fierce waffle crap), about 500 bytes of user data doesn't have the correct checksum. That's really it. It's not hard to restore user data to factory presets verses keeping backups of all titles.

As far as reformatting a twl brick, all I can tell you is that completely corrupting twl with garbage results in system format not being able to complete -- it's useless. There's the other specific issue of having a 4.5 mset on a 2ds and reformatting it leading to a brick (because you can't adjust the missing 3d slider and can't advance in system setup). who knows what other problems can arise during a reformat. It's just better to avoid them it you can. (or only performing them on emunand).

try installing 0004013800000102 v4625 and 0004800F484E4841 v5120
they should be the correct versions for your firmware.

Restore an old nand with GW system restore.
Actually formatting the sysNAND DID work.
I just did so and I can now access the Blue Gateway Card, although the one that is still giving me the error is the Four Swords DSiWare game.

I do have a NAND backup in there so I will restore it, any suggestions to do so without the Gateway loader?
Can I restore it via any other means?
I can still access the Gateway menu, just that I want to avoid switching the MSET ROP for Gateway instead of rxTools.

Only way I know without hardware is the Gateway launcher method. Side note - any idea exactly WHAT happened then? Maybe the currently installed TWL firmware was restored when he formatted?

Beats me.

All I know is that Four Swords is fucking up and I am already restoring the NAND haha.
Damn thing.

I will be sure to install FBI yet again and grab the title ID version for good this time, but I won't delete/downgrade anything now. :P
I am good with just the Time Warp CIA. XD

I don't think the nand restore will have any effect on your mset rop. Use gateway's restore as it's tested and stable code. Press up on the downgrade icon while having the (correct) NAND.bin backup on your big sd card's root.

Yep, the NAND backup did it.
I am now able to boot Four Swords yet again. (Good relief).

So for some odd reason, the format does NOT restore the TWL_FIRM it originally had, since the DSiWare was still fucked up after the format.
It was only after the NAND restore that it worked as intended.

Now, on to install the CIAs I had in sysNAND (BBM, FBI, SDF), I can assure you nothing regarding other tiles will be affected nor the NAND from now on. XD

EDIT: The 0004013800000102 version was 0x1211

Stop deleting stuff from your system NAND
That's probably important :P

Also use my 3DNUS to download these titles (If it ever happens again):

0004013800000102 v1489
0004800F484E4841 v0

Lesson: Never screw around, when it come's to OS's or FW's!
PS: It works, & im glad you got it fixed!

Are these still the latest versions of the DS FIRMs? I managed to corrupt mine shoving flashcart patches in.
