I'm new to the scene (The 3DS Scene, not Wii U/Wii) and I'll be getting my N3DSXL soon and I just wanted to know why do we have to buy a game that is barely available anymore to use homebrew? Why isn't there some kind of SD card exploit (Wii) or network exploit (Wii U) that we can use for free?

Oh. Well I guess homebrew is free. But what about Ninjhax though? Doesn't that require Cubic Ninja?
Sure it does. It requires the game because it contains a flaw, which allow userland code execution.
Yeah, it costs money, that sucks, but it's worth it.

If a new exploit is found on a demo or any other system apps, that would help a lot.

There was a port of ninjhax to the webkit exploit (if my memory is good), but was aborted.

There's ways of working around that, although they're not the most legal of ways. If firmware permits, running certain CFWs will allow you to install a CIA of Cubic Ninja, to which you can launch Ninjhax (Unless this doesn't work anymore, I'm not too sure).

However, you're probably better off just getting a copy of CN. They're not incredibly expensive if you know where to look, and it's dead simple to set up. I went and paid for a copy of CN because at the time it was the only way to launch it, there weren't any CFWs to which you could freely install CIA files.

Because you need the game console to get homebrew on the game console.

Just wait for citra or whatever it's called if you want a 3ds for free, but I doubt any homebrew would work on it, so it's a catch 9001.

You don't have to "literally" pay for homebrew, the homebrew is free. The reason a game is needed is not because the people who found the exploits are in cahoots with the game devs and want you to spend your money, it's because that is the vulnerability they found, but of course, anyone who doesn't like it that way is free to find other ways to get homebrew running.

Citra's been able to run homebrew since before it was able to run any commercial games.

Edit, disregard this. I didn't realize you said new3ds.

That's not always possible. For example, Wii mode on the Wii U requires a game too. For a while, homebrew on the Wii did as well.

running homebrew/unlicensed software requires finding a vulnerability/exploit in the system

there were several before (MSET, spider, etc.) but nintendo's patched them through updates
so if they couldn't find any in the system itself then they started searching in games and found one in cubic ninja

that's it. its not some commercial thing, its not like hackers make money out of cubic ninja

It's this big conspiracy i'm telling you.
It started with smealum finding a rare yet cheap game and then stockpiling it.
He did this by buying all the copies he could find and hijacking trucks full of them.
There were no reports on this because nobody cared about the games and weren't losing enough money off of it to launch an investigation.
But then he decided to install his rednand hack onto cubic ninja and stripped it down into what we know as ninjhax.
After he got enough copies of it he released the hack and then slowly started selling it to people who were pre-ordering all the amiibos in the first 2 minutes of announcement, the scalpers.
The original price that he bought it as is $10 per copy and each heist where he stole them was relatively cheap.
This means that he made ~$50 per copy and it is unknown how many copies he possesses, however he has definitely profited in the $millions range from this.
His next step is to invest the $millions into nx consoles, which he will then apply the d2x ios onto and sell them for 5x the price, in a market starved for exploits.
We should not allow him to do this, we must stand up and say no, DO NOT CHOOSE TO PUT EXPLOITS ON GAMES.

1. Would that require a Gateway?
2. By "not the most legal of ways" do you mean on the scale or pirating?

1. No, it wouldn't. There's CFWs that exist that have CIA installation.
2. Yeah, on the scale of pirating. You can find a copy of CN that has been converted from a cartridge image to an installable image, and you can probably make use of that.

You've done it now, you talked about the master plan. All the tinfoil in the world's not gonna save you now.
Ninjas haven been dispatched, I suggest you run and hide. Cause Smealum means business.
