Hacking Questioning use of IOS236 on vwii

Much experimentation and success being seen, there is a desire to enhance the utility on my Wii U.
It is often seen that IOS236 is installed by many homebrew users (often installed prior to use of WADs), however, I have seen many experienced users question its use.

Is IOS236 necessary for vwii at this point? Does is it still serve a purpose for WADs?

IOS236 use back in the day was mainly to get an IOS with the Trucha/NAND access and ABHPROT so you could install other IOS.

Still really hasn't changed today. IOS236 isn't really needed by anything on vWii, but it's an extra IOS that you can use to recover from installing the wrong IOS. CIOS + 236 is a good way to stay safe.

If you have CIOS installed, you really don't need 236 though.

D2Xv10 (249-251) can do pretty much everything 236 could and more. Only reason for 236 these days is the rare program, or if you just want an extra IOS with all the goodies to bail yourself out.

Would that mean that IOS236 has no other significant uses? I ask because many videos (which I understand are made by inexperienced users) show installation of 236 shortly before using MMM to install wads. I can almost recall one user claiming that 236 is needed if one wants to install wads (which sounds like an incorrect statement). I also saw another user install 236 prior to use of a usb loader. Should I assume that IOS236 altogether has little use on my vwii (which has d2x)?

They probably don't install a CIOS first. With HBC you already inherit ABHPROT, so no real need to install 236 first.

I know the answer to the questions that I previously held and have decided not to use the unnecessary addition of 236.

Yes, I am now aware that it is harmless in such manner. Thanks for the information.

Regardless, I have still decided against its installation since its few unique uses won't be utilized by me.

236 wasn't used "back in the day", that was 36. Several years later it became popular to patch IOS36, and also copy it to slot 236 so you had a backup copy. Eventually, hype was created for a "clean" NAND because people thought patching an official IOS would cause your Wii to explode and give you malaria. That's when it became popular to leave IOS36 alone, and just patch it in 236.

With the release of HBC v1.0.7, AHBPROT (short for AHB Protection) could be easily disabled, essentially eliminating the need of IOS236 all together. AHB access allowed you to disable MEMPROT, which in turn let you to safely apply on-the-fly patches to a running IOS, giving you the same abilities as loading an already patched IOS (more info on that here).

It has still remained a safety measure to install IOS236. Redundancy is a very good thing when it comes to brick protection.
