Is there a reason gamers in PAL during 80's and 90's got inferior versions?

Was it because the TVs couldn't handle too much or something? Surely they could have made the consoles optimised for both settings, couldn't they?

Games in US and Japan ran at their normal performance while on PAL territories they had the resolution, music and other kinds of slow downs thrown in, as well as the framerate was lowered. This kind of annoys me because now there's no reason to buy PAL copies of old cartridge consoles unless they're imports from US or Japan.

Even all the roms that I have are from US and Japan as the Europeans were fucked. But during the 00's they began to change bit by bit, like for example, Crash Bandicoot PS1 games were mostly identical and the European Platinum edition offered analogue stick support whereas the US version didn't.

the PAL standard was 50 Hz while NTSC is 60 Hz. PAL has since adopted a PAL 60 that runs at 60 Hz. However you guys also could get a 576i resolution to our 480i, and you had SCART which was an RGB signal much better than our composite and s-video signals.

I remember the first time I finally played Sonic in 60hz, it was a revelation; my whole childhood was a lie. Though I still have a soft spot for listening to the 50hz version tracks from Sonic 1 & 2.
Reminds me when I played my GameCube on my HD Crt TV after playing it on my old 30+ year old rca TV (damn it was big with awful quality looking back)

Yeah that's something that feels "wrong" when playing the unaltered version and then the PAL version sounds rightfully in its place. Damn nostalgia!
