Nintendo seriously needs to get with the times and change the way they manage things because it's time they release a proper 3D Mario game (on the next Nintendo home console because the Wii U's likely not getting another one) not a rehash of Mario 3D Land!

See, this is what Nintendo could accomplish, but it would take too much development time and effort as the only support for their home consoles at pretty much any given time. Granted, plenty of those environments looked a little out there for a Mario game, and Nintendo would certainly "Nintendo up" the style, but I would love to see something especially with an expanded castle like what was shown in the last minute or two of the video.

I would actually play a 3D Mario game styled like this if Nintendo could actually bother doing something right for a change.

Hell, if Nintendo could take the aesthetics they've shown off from the Zelda Wii U game and apply it to a 3D Mario, I'd even settle for that. Practically all the 3D Mario games lack detailed and interesting environments, they're always too..."cartoon-y", or rather they use cartoon-styled aesthetics to substitute the need for immense "detail", I guess? Which is nice when you want to be lazy and shit out some shoddy looking game, but c'mon Nintendo, it's 2015, at least pretend for a while you're not still stuck in 2005.

Literally none of those areas fits the Mario theme. The cartoony one was far TOO cartoony, and everything else was too realistic. Some of those areas (or things like it) would be amazing in a potential Metroid Prime though :(

Yep agreed, they might have looked amazing but they didn't look right none of them scenes even remotely suited the Mario franchise. You know what you're buying when you get a Mario game, why's everybody graphix whores these days. 3D world looked gorgeous and played it too. The cartoon-y style is Mario.

Having said that, I wouldn't mind seeing a Luigi's Manion 3 style game using the above environments. That game would be much more suited to that style.

I completely agree. For me the charm of the SM3D Land/World is the visual style and how the whole environment looks like an interactive toy. (e.g. the handles you can turn to raise parts up, the parts you can change by touching to makes parts raise and pop out, the levels where platforms raise you up to huge floating platforms.) Mario isn't supposed to be realistic - it's supposed to be fun. I feel Captain Toad Treasure Tracker actually took the feel of the SM3D games further, making each level like a self contained puzzle box which you could touch and interact with. None of these games would have the same charm if they looked real. Also, you only have to do a Google image search for "real mario" to see how horrifying this could be.

Agree. I mean I don't mind them going this far in detail, but I don't like any of the art directions. Gameplay would trump that, of course.

People keep saying Metriod and Zelda. What about Pikmin?

Mario 3D World was just another Mario 3D Land but in HD. Nothing really new or innovative but it was somewhat fun.

I'd like this as a Pokemon spinoff game like Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness. For Mario, it needs to be touched up a lot with cartoonish stuff. It looks too real, which in Mario terms, stale and sterile. It looks fine if you ignore the Mario game comparisons.

After 30 years you still expect Mario to be Innovative and new? I said you know what you're getting when you buy Mario which you do. There's very few if any games that are truly innovative these days. Everybody buys the same old FIFA and COD crap every year, which isn't even remotely new. I liked 3D world, it was fun.

I don't get why everyone is praising Super Mario 64 even today. The graphics were bland (look what the Crash Bandicoot and Spyro games managed to do on the inferior Playstation 1), the controls had only a rough sketch of the precision that Galaxy, 3D land and 3D world had. Also, the level design of the latter ones were miles above 64's.

Mario 64, Mario Sunshine and Mario Galaxy all felt different and brand new games without copying what the previous game was like. Nintendo's just lazy and isn't bothered to make a great new Mario game any more.

Maybe things'll change with NX/next Nintendo home console but probably not.

I wouldn't like nintendo going that way...
I love nintendo for being the something different. I prefer to play smash bros or monster hunter or zelda etc etc on my crappy resolution N3DSXL with the cartoony style rather than playing assassin's creed or call of duty etc on max settings... Really... I was a call of duty lover. I hated the last game they produced. It was the first time I uninstalled a CoD before I finish it. I was a hardcore PC gamer but last 2 years I find my self spending most of my gaming on my N3DSXL and I keep playing only CS GO on my PC at the moment

The problem is that there's probably not much they can do within the Mario formula to make things seem new and different. The 2D series are incremental improvements which add shinier graphics, new environments, new powerups and some new enemies, but are pretty much the same game over and over. 64 translated the game into 3D, and 3D Land/World were improvements on this. Galaxy 1/2 probably represent the biggest shake-up of the Mario formula, but I think this is more to do with the spacey atmosphere, the control method, the slight change in plot, the new characters and the change in orientation from horizontal/vertical/depth to a spherically based viewpoint (i.e. the planets). If you took SM Galaxy and hacked it to use 3D World's graphics, controls and characters then I don't think it would feel so different to the other 3D Mario games. I don't mean for this to sound like a negative criticism - I love the Mario universe so much that I included Mario, Bowser, Boo and a Piranha Plant on my Nintendo tattoo sleeve ;) I just don't think we should look to Mario for a high-brow, innovative gaming experience, because that's not what it's supposed to be. It's about running around dressed as a plumber, Tanuki or cat, grabbing mushrooms and jumping on turtles' heads ;) Anything outside of that format wouldn't be Mario any more.

This year Wii U owners will have 'Super Mario Maker' but it's really nothing new at all, just a level editor with less options than someone hacking the game could. Now, it seems to me that Nintendo's putting more effort into the amiibos than the games themselves and I wouldn't be wrong.

Nintendo's going to have amiibos available at McDonald's in 2016 so that should be interesting.

Anyway, I bought Mario 3D World back in 2013 because I thought it'd be a good game and it was but nothing that wasn't already done before. Fuck the cats.

The people complaining about the environments, it's pretty obvious the person just made Mario/a coin and put them in some borrowed asset environments. I doubt the person who did that made them. It was just an example of what could be done with Mario.

I thought that was already known. It even says that in the description.

Some might've not seen the entire video so they skipped the second part which was "too realistic? then check this out!". Second half was Wind Waker-ish.

Nintendo fanboys are just too stubborn to accept new content and visuals but it's something the company itself needs to move on with.
