So, the way I usually do it, is by using the DownloadHelper plugin. I load the video, and select the 720p or 1080p download quality..

...but after doing so, seems like the quality of the downloaded video is not the same as what you get when watching from youtube.. ..the downloaded video seems to have worst quality, or been compressed in the download process... (at least it seems to me?)..

well, I had my doubts ...and since I'm needing to download some videos with the best quality possible, I though about asking... ...so you know a more guaranteed method to download youtube videos, that really give you the best quality vids?

...BTW, the videos that I need to get downloaded are my own videos ...I don't have the files anymore, besides the youtube versions. And I need them downloaded so I can re-edit them, so I can also re-upload. That's why I need quality now, otherwise, the re-upload will have too big of a loss in quality.

Hope you guys can hand me some tips.

downloadhelper has a download and convert option. Be sure you are not pressing that button.

Also I have not properly tangled with the very high quality stuff since dash was introduced and that changed a few things there.

I would also ask if your playback options have a few more quality twiddlers than flash/html5 playback. If you have ramped up the deblocking in your player or have something like that active then it might appear different, even pumping the brightness up a bit could highlight some issues.
It might be time for some side by side/screengrab action to see what goes.

As for downloading stuff then I mainly use https://github.com/YePpHa/YouTubeCenter/wiki/Developer-Version these days. Though I mainly only want audio or the thing was probably never available in more than 480 to begin with.

Ah ...I forgot to say that I'm also using Pale Moon (it's a derivation of Firefox) ...I haven't tweaked the playback options in it, but I'm sure it has less playback options than Chrome.. ..and quite possible, less overall quality in comparison :/ (the Palemon Devs are not much interested in using Google's proprietary APIs, if I remember right...).

Yup, I would then, probably, use some Chrome addons, or some of the softwares that you guys recommended.. I think.

Seems that I just need to figure out the best option, and use it? :creep:

I mostly use the thingy
um.. seems like the site converts before downloading ...that means that a compression is inevitable ...well, I'll add it to my list, and test it too if needed, thanks.

Tons of options, fast, free, open source, not ad ridden.

Yup, I know that are a ton of options ...and that's the problem ...I couldn't find out which one would retain the video quality the most.. and that's all I'm caring about right now ..It's a thing not pointed out very often in other places.. so yup, have you tried that site? What did you thought about the downloaded video's img quality? tnks

The link I posted is a downloaded program. It will detect all the resolutions available from the youtube link (so it will only let you go as high as the original quality). Just pick the highest resolution for the video. The audio is AAC which is fine (youtube isn't going to be the best anyway. I don't download videos from youtube usually but when I had to, this did a great job. No different from watching it on the highest quality on youtube.

downloadhelper stopped working a few week ago for me,
it seems for like 6 months or so, ff has been lagging like crazy, especially sites like amazon
I was reading reviews for it extension seeing if its going to be fixed and another user complained of the same thing
I just disabled it and, no more lag, amazon loads fine now

I started using youtube mp3 podcaster, works for dl videos not just mp3's and it seems to be fine
