What I know:
Jasper
MFR Date: 2009-10-10
Yellow wires = Lite-on Drive
Dash: 17349 (latest update)

My computer has sata ports. I don't know how to determine of my chipset is compatible.

What I want:
Flash my dvd drive to play backups.

I know I might need a Probe 3. According to Team Xecuter, the Liteon 83850V1 does not require a Probe.
I can build my own Probe.
Should I disassemble the 360 to find the model of my drive?
Will I need a special drive to burn backups?
I want to document my experience here if it's allowed.

You'll need Jungleflasher, it comes with a manual on how to flash it and what not.
A list of compatible chipsets is found here.
If my chipset won't work, can you recommend as sata-to-usb adapter that will work? Something really cheap hopefully.

OMG, my drive is detected. I had to sign the portio64.sys driver, put my pc into test mode and disable AHCI to get JF to detect my drive. I new it would work because my BIOS detected the rive right away.

Here is my chipset: 1C00

So, someone should add that to the compatible chipset list.

Neat.
Now only thing left is extracting keys and flashing it.
Done.

I used this guide to create a probe and to flash the drive. It failed the first time on the last step because I waited a second and a half. Did it again, and voila!
The guide is the best because you don't need a switch and you don't have to cut the ground cable. He grounds a probe to the chassis of the console.

Next step is burning my backups. I have a Hitachi GBC-H20L DVD+R DL
I hear that the best DVDs to use are the DL Verbatims. Do any other DVDs work? I'm looking for the cheapest solution.

Don't cheap out on backup media.
Chances of game verification failure will only get bigger.

Besides, you already can play free games, then the least you coul do is spend a little extra on proper backup media.

XGD3 games need to be burned with a hacked iHAS drive or a drive compatible with the Burner Max payload tool.

I'm considering an xk3y. It goes for about $70 which is probably better than buying an iHas + Verbatims. Will I need the xk3y remote? I still have my backups from flashing the drive, will I need those as well? Thanks.

I also have a ASUS DRW-24B1 ST/LT rev.B which is supposedly crossflashble to an iHAS. Can someone link a tutorial to flash my drive to an iHas?

You'll only need the DVD key (dummy.bin) in order to make the Xkey work.
I highly suggest an Xkey, far easier then burning backups.
Remote isn't needed. MenuISO takes care of selecting the games.

Thanks. I just burned an XGD2 game on an ASUS DRW-24B1ST i drive. I used Memorex 8.5 GB 8 X Double Layer DVD+R

Yes, the model shows up as "i" in the device manager but on the drive itself, it says it's a B model.
I was not able to read the EEPROM to flash it to an iHAS.

Laptop drive?
I believe only the desktop ones are cross flashable.
Nope, it's a desktop drive. This one specifically.
And whats even more interesting is that the drive is showing that I have 8.73gb free space. I even deleted BurnerMax to make sure it wasn't messing with anything.

But in My Compute, it shows up as an 8.13 disk.

Does this mean I don't even have to use BurnerMax to burn XGD3 images?

Unless Imgburn has the ability to burn an extra GB of space to 8.5 GB discs then yes.
I still advise the burner max payload tool tho.
Better safe then sorry.

Never mind, I had another copy of BurnerMax hidden away that had the 'auto" option checked. Deleted the folder, restarted the computer and now IMGBurn is showing 8.54 and My Computer is showing 7.96gb. Guess I have to use BurnerMax after all. Does this mean my drive will burn XGD3 images?

The drive will burn XGD3 images yep.
However I highly advise you to not use cheap media, go for Verbatim ones.
Well, I still have 9 left, so it won't hurt to mess around with them to see what results I get. First, I will try burning at 2.4x and if that doesn't go well, I will try 4x. Finally, I will try 8x. Cheap media is made to be burned at 8x to get best results. My guess is that I might waste 1 or 2 disks before I find the best burning method. I used 4x when burning the XGD2 game and it worked out just fine. I have a feeling these Memorex dvds are of high quality. I mean, my Target sells 10 for $16.19

Update: Just realized my burner doesn't support 2.4x
Downloaded the firmware updater from ASUS's website and ran the firmware update. Of course, it failed because I have the exact same firmware. After that, the Read Flash button started working. The Write Flash button is still greyed out.

I was able to backup the flash.(1.00.bin)
Using the EEPROM Utility, I was able to backup the EEPROM.(ASUS_DRW...bin)

Update 2: So I burned GTA V which is a XDG3 game using these settings, except I burned at 4x because that's the lowest my drive can do. I tried launching the game from the main screen but eveytime I did, it would tell me that the disk was dirty and that I should clean it and restart my console. I changed my startup options to autoboot into the game and it loaded no problem. Installed the game, inserted disk 2 and now playing GTA 5. I really need to figure out how to flash this drive right now!!!

Doesn't matter.
Flags trigger as soon as te disc fails an AP check, it gets stored in the NAND and as soon as you connect to Live, it gets send to MS.
