I just bought a Wii U, so don't really have much of a need for my old Wii at this point. I've been considering making some kind of MAME cabinet, and I figure using the Wii + MAME homebrew wouldn't be such a bad idea. But for it to be user friendly it'd need to boot directly into the MAME app. I'm wondering if this is a possibility? Thanks for any help!

Certainly is: Priiloader. Loads itself before the system menu and allows you to autoboot into a variety of apps.
Personal recommendation: I'd autoboot into either Wiiflow or Postloader, that way you can use the plugins of either to access not only mame but FBA using retroarch and all the rest ;)

Brilliant :)

Unrelated question, any idea if any version of MAME on the Wii is capable of running Street Fighter 3?

Haha, no sorry! You'll have to make do with CPS2 games (Xmen vs SF, Marvel vs Capcom 1, SF Alpha 3 etc) and that's on Retroarch only, not Mame. Neo Geo titles up to about 23Mb also work on Retroarch (early King of the Fighters, Samurai Shodown 4, Real Bout Fatal Fury) so there's plenty to go at, but no the Wii just can't handle SFIII - just doesn't have the legs!

Yeah I figured, it's a pretty beastly game. Alright, I'll look into what else can run and see if it's worth setting up then. Thanks for the help!
