Hi there,

New poster. I just recently received my Sky3DS and I also ordered a Micro SD from the same website. However I've been having a few issues with my first game, Pokemon X. Sometimes it randomly freezes, causing the need to shut the system down with the power button and start it. I've done some searching and it seems like this might be an SD card issue.

My current card says 'SanDisk' at the top, '32GB' on the left, and 'Micro SDHC' with an I next to the name and a 4 in a circle on the right. It also says 'made in china' on the front in tiny tiny font, with some kind of serial number. I can't find any picture online that looks exactly like it. It came in a clear card case, no branded packaging.

Am I dealing with a fake card here? Or if it is real, should I change it for a better one? Can someone recommend a card that will run smoothly? (as you can tell, I'm not an expert at this).

Any help is really appreciated. At the moment it's not the worst thing because the Sky3DS does still run, but I'd like to not have to worry that it will crash at a crucial moment.

You should definitely switch you micro-sd to a class 10 one (yours is class 4, therefore really slow) so that may be the problem: the game loads too slow to be played correctly.

I'm a super newbie at this (my old r4 for my DS ran like a dream), so forgive my ignorance- I'm guessing the number in the circle denotes the class?
Do you have any recommendations for a better card?

Heres a 32 gig for 15 http://www.amazon.com/SanDisk-Memory-Adapter--SDSDQUAN-064G-G4A-Version/dp/B00M55C1I2/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1432376885&sr=8-2&keywords=sandisk ultra. Also if you want to know if the card is fake run it through h2testw (format is required).

Thanks, I think I'll get one similar to that but in the smaller size, since I've already spent money on this SD card that I can't use...
Now to find out if I can transfer my save file across the two cards so I don't have to restart.

Check the options in diskwriter, it's there and then some.

Cubic Ninja / Ocarina Exploit
You already have a Sky so that means you have Cubic Ninja. You only need Cubic Ninja until you install the system settings downgrade. I have both a Sky and Gateway and the Gateway is so much better, but that's just my opinion. Not trying to start another Sky/Gateway fight thread.

If you do go Gateway use cia's for online games to avoid bans.

Why haven't you ordered Gateway instead, if you were in at firmware 9.0??
Two reasons really- it was cheaper to get a Sky than to get a Gateway + Ocarina/Cubic Ninja or a Gateway + a Sky. And I also just wanted something I could plug and play. I'm not interested in homebrew etc atm and I find the whole Gateway process confusing. I have no idea what EMUNAND and all that is. Maybe once they update and simplify Gateway I'll switch.
Edit: On my phone, typing isnt easy haha

This is semi-off topic but I remember back in the day when the DS pokemon games would do the same thing. If you tried playing those games on a flashcard with a slower microsd the games would eventually crash usually when loading a new area. Even though some cards would get firmware updates to try and correct these issues it would still happen.

Anyways instead of buying a new class 10 microsd card right away (which regardless if the following fixes your problem you should still do) try instead reformatting your microsd to fat32 with a 64kb*** allocation unit size. This could fix the problem.

*** Or use the highest available unit size.

Out of curiosity, what should that do that is different from the current set up of the card?

You should google to find out more in detail but basically if you're dealing with bigger files like 3DS/DS games its better to use a bigger unit size. Of course some argue it doesn't do much but I've always had better performance with 64kb then I did with 32kb. It also won't damage your card and it's a simple process.

Here's a video demonstrating the effects with Animal Crossing. Granted it's just taking screenshots but you get a general idea.

Essentially it should improve the performance of the card.

Interesting... I guess I could combine with a new card for the best of both? If that even works haha

May I ask you something about it? How should I format my micro-sd to 64k clusters? Which program should I use?
