Hi guys,

Im going on holiday next week, and urgently need to get myself a flash card that can play both retail 3ds releases and some e-shop games? Please can you recommend me which one to buy?

For the shop i know in particular its more rare, however I'm only really looking for two main games from there which are shovel knight and Shantae. Hopefully those work or can be converted to .3ds files and made to work?

The two cards I've heard that are best are Sky3DS (which i heard can play eshop games but has a terrible interface for changing the games) and the Gateway 3DS (which works with eshop and 3ds but doesn't work on latest firmwares). Maybe others too?

I have the original 3DS (UK PAL) but its updated to the latest firmware.

PS:- If i go for Gateway 3DS can i easily downgrade my 3DS firmware to a compatible one for Gateway?

NOTE: Im also thinking of upgrading and buying the NEW 3DS XL from a store maybe even in the next few days. However, that will probably still come upgraded to latest firmware or near about?!

Thanks!

With your 3DS you're stuck with sky3DS which is .3ds games only. You will not be able to play eshop backups with this cart. You can only downgrade firmwares 9.2 and below on o3DS (yours is on the newest firmware which is 9.7). As stated above you can go by serial number on the box to find an exploitable n3DS. Then I would recommend Gateway if you want ease of use. If you're willing to wait there is PASTA CFW. You can use it now if you have the game cubic ninja. The wait is for a port to mset or spider, which will allow it to be loaded without a game.

ok thanks guys, looks like the only option i have is to get the sky3ds for now.

But the question is how will i be able to then play the two main games i am after shantae and shovel knight? Is there any other card or way i can use to get them? or would i have to wait a few weeks/months until sky3D becomes compatible with eshop?

Sky isn't likely to ever play eshop dumps. As you're updated you could actually buy the games, but there's no way to play pirated versions unless you get a console with an exploitable firmware.

I see, thanks for letting me know!

So whats the chance that Gateway will work with the latest firmware the 3DS is on now? Those games i mentioned on eshop work with the Gateway right?

Actually if he's on the latest firmware he can't use any CFW. 9.2 and bellow is the only way to get full kernel access at the moment.

If I was unclear, that part was meant if he purchases a n3DS as well.

EDIT:By kernel access he means anything that requires a hack to run. Sky works differently so it will still work.

yes pretty much everything works with GW, but its is unlikely we will see any 9.3+ compatibility for quite a while now

Ok in that case I'm more and more inclined to purchase a new 3ds XL that works with Gateway card. So i need up to 9.2 only right. Any suggestions where you could get one from in UK, London? :D

best bet would be somewhere that lets you have a look at the box before you buy it or better yet the actual console

I'm really pissed with myself :( i hadn't touched my o3DS in months/year and only turned it on yesterday after so long to see what was available on the e-store. Wouldn't let me view it until i updated the system so i did :( such a twat! Didn't even think about flashcard until after viewing the e-store and finding so many games that i wanted to try out and that thought only came to me this morning, before today i didn't even know flashcards existed yet for 3ds. What horrible luck!
