Blu-rays sometimes are an ass to play because of the region locks so I was wondering since Wii U disc games are based on Blu-ray discs would it be possible, that the Blu-ray Player function be unlocked?

The Wii once was hacked was able to play DVDs so I'm wondering.

If a backup loader was ever released then region free would probably be one of the options. One thing at a time though, you should be asking if a backup loader will ever be released. Looking at the 3DS scene, most of the homebrew devs aren't interested in backup loaders, so I wonder if the Wii U homebrew devs are going to be like that. I am not looking forward to Wii U piracy if it includes online cheating.

As far as I can tell the drive should be able to do it, it's just a matter of a driver to read it correctly (which requires IOSU exploit/emuNAND/CFW).

Well, the GC and Wii drives had some hardware-level protection that stopped them from using normal DVDs. The Wii U likely has a similar thing to prevent using Blu-ray discs.

What is nintendos reasoning for that? Anti Piracy?

I always wanted to know the reason for that, funny thing is that on both wii and gc there is a way to "unlock" the dvd read feature, on the gc with special disc operations and on wii by enabling it in the ios (only works on older wii drives though)

I'd totally get an additional Wii U just to have it hacked with Nintendont and being a Blu-ray Player Region Free. I'm looking to import a BDP Region Free from Australia by a user from a different forum but it's always great to have another one that isn't locked.

P.S.: As much hate as HD-DVD got (and maybe still does at Blu-ray.com) it was actually completely region free but Blu-ray won and so region locks came back into play.

I thought that was because Nintendo had to purchase rights to truly read DVD movie media and play the movies off of them, which really didn't have a point for the Wii. Have I been wrong this whole time?

Licensing reasons mostly, not hardware limitations, they would have to pay royalties to do so, and why can't people just buy a <$100 Blu-ray player anyways?
Region Free Blu-ray Players might have gotten cheaper now but that doesn't apply everywhere. In UK they range from £125 ($194) to £159 ($247).

Some can if they have an extra $100 to spare. Do you? :)

There are other reasons it would be nice, inputs on TVs, less clutter etc. In most cases you just use play and maybe pause, (p0rn excepted). :)

Allowing regular dvds to be used would open the door for obtaining drive keys. (well alot sooner than currently)
I don't think it has anything to do with licensing at all. Just used to slow down hackers. (well at least they think)
Also, I heard the JP system is using a different OS then NTSC. I sure would like to get my hands on a JP U. (don't send me one, get in touch with MN1 or NW to send them one)
I would like to confirm this for sure. Probably gonna need a JP unit and a PAL unit to get the region bypassed. (again not me but rather MN,NW)
If nobody steps up for this I may purchase both of these and if I do I will pm one of these guys with an IP to access remotely. (that is if they haven't already done this with someone else)
Anyway, looks like the U is about to be P'wned soon.

Uh why would it. It's the same OSv11 core files from NUS, same for all console regions. The only difference is system programs like the menu and browser and etc have different text files, otherwise they're basically identical :P I don't even need to own a system to tell you that.

In the US, Amazon has a brand name region free player for $99. I'm betting I could find an off brand one straight from China for like $60. Or I could probably find one that has been hacked or something on Ebay or whatnot for that price too. You could just buy a cheap model that someone has already figured out how to hack, flash a custom firmware on. That is probably your best bet. Look up firmware hacks and buy a model that can be hacked.
